Spotlight ~ Katie Rox
Is there a contest yet for ‘Canada’s Sweetheart’? If not there should be and if there was, Katie Rox would win, hands down. And, before you say anything, it’s not about the amazing girl next door looks, or her her frank and funny youtube vlog’s; it’s about the truthful, earnest and wise lyrics and just exactly how they are sung – which is some kind of fantastic that makes you want to either stand up and cheer for her every move or eat her up with a spoon and a side of strawberry ice cream. She’s just that good, and you will want to be along with her, on every step of her journey.
“Born and raised a farm girl on the prairies of Alberta, Katie knew she wanted to sing from the time she was 8 years old. At least she thought she did. During her first recital she got up to sing her song, looked at all the people quietly waiting for her to start and promptly burst into tears. Thankfully, 45 minutes later she had a change of heart, got up on the stage and sang her song and hasn’t looked back since. She sang standing on buckets in barns, for friends in their living rooms, in competitions at festivals, wherever anyone would listen.”
Katie had found her calling early, as the photos of her wee self will tell attest to in her swish new video for the new single ‘Airplane‘.
“After completing her music diploma in college, Katie ventured on towards the next step in her career. She said goodbye to the farm, cattle and horses and hello to the skyscrapers and traffic of Vancouver. It wasn’t long before Katie was working at The Warehouse Recording Studio as an office manager, giving her the opportunity to meet and mingle with some of the top musicians and singers in the world. She was asked to sing back up for a song Mandy Moore was recording and before long was approached to be the lead singer in a newly formed industrial rock band called Jakalope. After international success and two albums as the lead singer of Jakalope, Katie decided it was time to go back to her country roots. Her writing has taken a softer more personal sound with and this is where her music is truly finding its clearest voice.
Katie’s solo albums “High Standards” and “Searchlight” have seen her complete two cross-Canada tours, including her third annual appearance at the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival and a return performance to the legendary Calgary Stampede. She also performed in Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. During her time working at The Warehouse, Katie met and became friends with Simple Plan’s Sébastien Lefebvre. They had always wanted to work together and this came to fruition with the release of a holiday EP titled “Christmas Etc.”.
Having just released her third album entitled “Pony Up”, Katie is also on another cross Canada tour. From Juno nominated rock star with a top-three track on the Japanese pop charts to her profile on MTV’s “Cribs”, from international tours to multiple Much Music Video nominations, Katie has enjoyed success in the fast lane. Now, the country girl with soul has something new to share. And judging from the response of critics and fans alike, it seems Katie Rox has found the perfect fit.”
