The 4th Annual Shadow Polaris

Since our first year NxEW has annually asked our readers which album you would award the Polaris Music Prize to if you got a vote and NxEW readers have always voted differently than the Polaris Jury.

In 2009 Julie Doiron won with I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day. In 2010, the Wooden Sky's If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone and last year the Russian Futurists the Weight's on the Wheels was the pick of NxEW readers. None of these albums made the short list in the official Polaris Prize.

Unlike the Polaris Music Prize, NxEW doesn't have a gala to invite you to or $30,000 to hand out but, everyone gets a vote.

Nominating an album is easy. Qualifying albums must have been released between June 1, 2010 and May 31, 2011. The 40 albums selected for the Polaris Long List will automatically be included in the first round, so no need to nominate those. If your favorite album wasn't on the long list though just mention it in the comments section, tweet it @NxEW or email it to NorthbyEastWest@gmail.com. Nominations will be accepted until July 10 and then several rounds of voting will start to narrow the list.

Every year, after the voting begins, someone asks why their favorite album wasn't included, so now is your chance.

My nominees: Every Child a Daughter Every Moon a Sun (The Wooden Sky), All Of It Was Mine (The Weather Station), and Busting Visions (Zeus).

  • JoJo Maung

I would like to nominate the lads from Montreal Ol’Savannah – for their debut Self Titled Album “Ol’ Savannah’ & ‘ Underneath the Old Red Barn’ – these whiskey swilling, foot stomping, crazy riffs with washboard scraping toupe has brought bluegrass and roots back to the forefront of the Montreal Music scene. Truly a Canadian diamond in the rough….

Every Child a Daughter Every Moon a Sun by the Wooden Sky. How did that not even get long listed? My faith in Polaris is completely lost.

  • Sasha

I would like to join JoJo in nominating Ol’ Savannah’s debut, self-titled album (Released May 6 2011) (www.olsavannah.com)
