It's a little different now than it was when they recorded their full length debut Volcano...Bloody Volcano. In November bassist Keith Olsen departed citing life and tour fatigue and has been replaced by Catherine Hiltz (of Illfit Outfit and Blind Tiger, Tiger).

In an interview with Vue Weekly singer guitarist Chris Connelly says:
""With this new lineup we're writing a lot more," he says. "I was a little worried at first because we knew we were going to record this winter and we'd just got a new member, but we've been writing tons of stuff."

...

"I think our last record, because we were paying for it out of our own pocket, we had everything really tightly figured out before we went into the studio," he recalls. "This time we're making a conscious effort to keep it kind of loose so there still can be a bit of a jammy feel to it where you can capture some of that creative spark that happens when you have ideas."
A little bird at Mint Records (the band's label) told me that the new stuff is even better than what was on the first album. So if you love them, prepare to love them more. (Full disclosure, I manage the bands website and do stuff for Mint from time to time - I haven't heard the new stuff though.)

Hot Panda also has some dates coming up, including visits to SXSW and Canadian Music Week, so if you want an early preview of what might be on their sophmore album go to:
Feb. 14 in Edmonton at The Pawn Shop w/Rah Rah and Sans AIDS
March 12 in Vancouver @ the HIVE (paralympics event)
March 13- CMW, Toronto, Lee's Palace w/ Electric Six
March 18- SXSW, Austin, Mint/Six Shooter Hootenany w/ Shout out Out Out Out, The Pack A.D., etc
March 19- SXSW, Austin @ Jaime's Spanish Villa

<param name="movie" Chris recently put Rock Plaza Central on an indefinite hiatus from touring to get ready for fatherhood and now it's here. From Rock Plaza Central's Myspace Blog:

"my best creation yet
i figured, from the amount i've already mentioned it, that people might want to know: it's a boy! named Idris. born sunday night at 9pm after 7 hours of oxytocin iv and only a half hour of pushing. i actually nearly missed it because we thought it was progressing slowly and it was suggested i go grab something to eat. laura and the baby were both incredible. never been so proud. the first name is welsh. his great-great-grandfather's name (my grandmother's father. the one who isturning 100 in may.). pronounced EYE-dris. calling him Eider, mostly, like the duck. google the king eider. gorgeous creature. there was also a king idris of wales, possibly only legendary, who was a giant.

more from wiki:
Idris, King of Meirionydd (c. 560-632) (Latin: Idrus; English: Ider), also known as Idris Gawr ("Idris the Giant"), was a giant and astronomer of Welsh tradition, whose rock-hewn chair on the summit of Cadair Idris was supposed to mete out death, madness, or poetic inspiration to whoever spent a night upon it.

we've also called him, so far, Squeaker, Pato (spanish for duck), and The Poopsmith. actually, "Squeaker, Pato, and The Poopsmith" sounds like a great name for a song/album/story. last night, i tried to tell him one about Squeaker going to the moon to get his frends some roti and some nose-mittens (i was pretty tired), at a great store called Nose-Smitten (or maybe not soooo tired).

7 lbs 3 oz., which is spot on 50th percentile, with a gigantic 97th percentile eaton head. in fact, he already looks remarkably like me, possibly with laura's dimple.

home now. laura's asleep in bed. eider is sleeping in my arms. i'm in love.

chris"

And to Idris, a little advice from dad:

Rock Plaza Central - (Don't You Believe The Words Of) Handsome Men from josh lyon on Vimeo.

Nominees Announced for 10th Annual Independent Music Awards

Canadian Music Fest and Galaxie have announced the nominees for the 10th Annual Independent Music Awards ("The Indies"). has posted part 1 of an interview with Liz Worth, the author of Treat Me Like Dirt: An Oral History Of Punk In Toronto And Beyond
"Is it possible to underestimate how boring Toronto was in 1976?

(laughs)

You couldn’t even buy black jeans, as you point out. And everything changed around the time you’re writing about, with this scene, with the art scene, with the Toronto Film Festival, with CITY-TV all helping to loosen the sphincter of this tight-ass town. What did you know of that time period?

I wish I had a better sense of things. My parents are older; they’re born in 1936. They’ve lived through many decades, but were never tuned into popular culture. They had parties and had fun, but were never a part of any music scene. If I ever asked them details about what things were like at certain times, they’d just say, ‘whatever,’ they didn’t care. But I do remember when I was growing up when Sunday shopping came in and what a huge deal that was for Toronto. People were so mad and divided; some people thought the world was coming to an end if stores were open on Sunday—and that really wasn’t that long ago."
Read the whole thing at http://radiofreecanuckistan.blogspot.com/2010/02/liz-worth-treat-me-like-dirt-pt1.html!

Treat Me Like Dirt is available through better independent book stores and online here.

Update: Part II of the Interview is here.

Lullaby Arkestra release free 3 song EP, Announce N.American Tour Dates

Via Chartattack - Toronto's Lullabye Arkestra has released a free 3 song EP in advance of a North American tour that will take them through a good chunk of the United States in March before returning for a round of Canadian dates in Arpil.

The 3 Song EP contains:
1. The controversy kicked in almost immediately. It was unavoidable really. People accused Metric of using Haiti for self promotion, they said Help, I'm Alive was inappropriate as a message etc.,

The reality is that tall poppy syndrome is in full effect when it comes to Metric. It doesn't matter much what they do someone is going to criticize them for it. At any rate Metric has re-done the t-shirt design. In an email today the band said:
"Hello all,

Over the past few days, we have come to realize that some people found the wording of our Help Haiti t-shirt design to be questionable. Despite our good intentions, we can see how the messaging could be interpreted in a way different than we intended, and we apologize to anyone who took offense.

Moving forward, we will continue with the campaign, as Haiti will still need our assistance and donations long after the telethons and fundraisers are out of the news. We have however come up with a new, simple ribbon-design t-shirt in place of the original version which will be available here.

Anyone who has already bought a t-shirt will have the choice of keeping their original purchase, or selecting this new version instead. We will contact purchasers individually in the coming days in order to determine your preference.

We appreciate the dialogue and urge you to contribute to this campaign or others that are making an effort to help a country in need.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has participated in the Help Haiti t-shirt campaign so far. We have already raised thousands of dollars that will go toward aiding those dealing first-hand with this catastrophic event.

If you prefer to donate directly to a relief organization, then please click on any of the following links: Red Cross / Oxfam / Unicef / Save The Children / World Vision / Canada For Haiti / Partners In Health

Thanks for you ears,

xox metric"
Oddly no one thought it was inappropriate for them to do Help, I'm Alive at the Canada for Haiti concert that raised 13.5 million for earthquake victims (or at least if they did they didn't say so). Oh well, whatever... You can get the t-shirt at http://www.kt8merch.com/store/pages/metric

New Video: Dan Mangan - Road Regrets

A brand new video from Dan Mangan Directed by: Jon Busby, Produced by: Jesse Davidge and Marc Demers, Produced at Blatant Studios, Vancouver BC

And as a special encore, a special encore: Via tylerstalman - "After an incredible show at the SAIT campus, Dan Mangan climbed through the crowd for an encore atop the bar tables, and magiced us away with a singalong of So Much for Everyone from his album Postcards and Daydreaming. Swapping winter gloves for plastic Hillside mugs, fans gathered at Guelph's Sleeman Centre to take in performances from Owen Pallett, Hawksley Workman and Ani Di Franco, who gave her only Ontario performance on Saturday night. Winter's answer to summer's best music festival, Hillside Inside presented as usual, an eclectic array of musicians and helped us escape the cold for a little while. Going back and forth between two stages a short stroll away from each other, Hillsiders enjoyed a mix of folky-fiddles and synthy-beats, and remembered just why they love Hillside so much in the first place.

Winter blues were danced away as Basia Bulat kicked things off with an energy that lingered until the very end. Nearly nine hours of music later, Hillsiders exited in an orderly fashion without leaving the day's garbage behind them - the very essence of Hillside being its friendly charm and devotion to keeping things friendly for the environment. What was once classified as a folk festival has now evolved into a more and more liberal collective of musicians each year, as the genre of "folk" itself continues to outgrow the kind of linguistic boundaries that previously would have kept Woodhands and Owen Pallett from playing at the same concert.

Hillsiders welcomed the increasingly familiar Rural Alberta Advantage, who played an acoustic cover of "Eye of The Tiger" which was cozy and endearing, if not a little funny as visions of Sylvester Stallone in Rocky III inevitably crept into the minds of those who watched. Not exactly the comedic type, the RAA paid homage to the prairies as they so often do, stirring up mixed feelings for their hometown with a refreshing brand of folk. "It's kind of depressing but I hope you like it anyway", said lead singer Nils Edenloff before launching into Frank, AB, a song about Alberta's Frank Slide disaster.

Later, fans moved to the Main Stage with a magnetic pace at the sound of Owen Pallett's introductory plucking on 'Keep The Dog Quiet'. Given the outpour of applause for his recent Heartland LP, a later set time would have been well deserved, albeit unnecessary, as fans of Toronto's indie-golden child basked in the kind of concert that make even the audience experience catharsis. "This Is The Dream Of Win And Regine" from his debut effort Has A Good Home brought with it an air of poignancy, a rare occasion given the hockey arena it took place in. Pallett, who has a soft spot in the hearts of Hillsiders everywhere, closed the set with "Lewis Takes Off His Shirt", the same song that made Hillside magic last summer after defying demands from stage crews to cut his performance short due to a lightning storm.

And while not every set brought Hillsiders to tears, most brought them to their feet. Montreal act Socalled (aka Josh Dolgi) jammed on a keytar like a mad scientist concocting a formula of hip hop and klezmar, and Woodhands turned the Sleeman Centre into a rave before sending attendees into the night, proving once again that Hillside isn't just for folksters anymore. "We're always the odd one out at Hillside, which is exciting for us because it's all these awesome folk bands, and then us, so I think people get excited. We had a really good time last time", says Dan Werb, one half of the indietronica team. Reminiscing about last July's Hillside festival, drummer Paul Banwatt praised the crowd. "People were definitely ready to party and that made it pretty special. That show was really special just because of how excited the crowd was." And who was Banwatt most excited to see after he pulled double duty with both Woodhands and the Rural Alberta Advantage? "Owen Pallett. "He's just so good."

West coast electro-acoustic fiddle playing hip hoppers Delhi 2 Dublin turned Hillside Inside into a sweaty dance party before it was even dark outside with their energetic fusion of Bhangri and Celtic music. Says Tarun Nayar of D2D, "Last summer we played Hillside on the Sunday night in the pouring rain. We were in a tent so people just packed in to see us, probably more for the shelter than for the music. Hundreds of people crammed into a tent with thunder crashing outside and we just gave 'er". Hard to forget, Delhi 2 Dublin has discarded the outdated notions of musical categories to create a sound all their own, and kudos to them for that.

Hawksley Workman thanked the crowd for keeping him in business, and offered fans a Cheap Trick cover in return. Never the silent type, stories of drunken Tokyo bike rides and cigarettes in the bathtub were told before finishing up with "Dirty and True", from 2001's (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves.

Musical multi-tasker Afie Jurvanen, who performs as Bahamas, readied Hillsiders for Ani Di Franco's set, playing songs from his recent solo debut Pink Strat. Says Jurvanen of Hillside's unique atmosphere: "Everyone is feeling good, especially when the sun is shining. Even when its not, everyone is just so fucking pumped for you to be there. Maybe its cliché or something, but as a performer, when you can sense that people are really excited and when they're anticipating you, you're communicating. The audience is saying something to you and you're singing to them and they're responding and they're clapping and singing along. That's my favourite type of environment."

Moments after Bahamas' finished up, Ani Di Franco made her much anticipated return to Ontario and delivered a set that was both inspiring and fierce. "Thank you for being an example of a possibility" she said with regards to the legalization of gay marriage in Canada, something that the feminist icon has rallied in support of for years. Digging back into a high-caliber catalogue, Di Franco made it clear she's still queen of her own compost heap as she performed numbers such as "32 Flavors", "Imagine That" and "Splinter", satisfying the thirst of even the most longtime fan.

And while spirits were high and feelings were positive, the declining economical climate of Guelph, coupled with an understandable dislike of the cold, attendance dropped drastically compared to last year's wintertime jamboree, causing organizers to rethink what the future holds for Hillside Inside. Says Afie Jurvanen, "Some of that spirit from the summertime in the cold of February can be a nice reminder, like 'oh yeah, life here is pretty wicked. In the summer'." Certainly a reason to pile on your snowsuit and visit Guelph every February, Hillside Inside is, at the very least, the h'or d'oeuvre to the delicious musical feast that is Hillside.

originally written for The Cord Weekly

Thrush Hermit adds afternoon all-ages show in Toronto, March 28

Another day another announcement - Yesterday Joel Plaskett announced a Thrush Hermit box set (hopefully) in time for the reunion tour.
