Tyler Morgenstern

Originally hailing from Calgary, Alberta (and occasionally the surrounding area), Tyler has been an avid lover and creator of music for just about as long as he can remember. Growing up somewhere between his dad's collection of James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, and Ian Tyson records, 1990s pop and alternative radio, and Disc Drive with Jurgen Gothe, Tyler found himself fascinated by music of all kinds and fixated on the idea of writing his own. After many half-hearted years of piano lessons, and an extended stay as a clarinetist in a number of off-key concert bands, he picked up his dad's very first guitar- a Yamaha acoustic- and everything seemed to click. Ever since, Tyler has been focused on creating and sharing his own body of work, inspired by the many artists he admires and counts as heroes. On this list? Dan Mangan, Justin Rutledge, Basia Bulat, Brian Borcherdt, Jill and Matthew Barber, Hey Rosetta, Said the Whale, Veda Hille, and occasionally, Lil Mama.

In the Fall of 2007, Tyler made the jump to the coast, taking up residence as a Communication major at Vancouver's Simon Fraser University, and gradually got acquainted with, through a series of awkward conversations and happy accidents, the vibrant music community he had stumbled into. Nearly three years later, Tyler's passion for all things Canadian music has only intensified and, combined with his startling geekiness and love for social media, has given rise to a number of writing projects attempting to chronicle, celebrate, and promote the Vancouver cultural scene, including his main blog, Man Descending. Currently, Tyler is a full time student and works on the side as an open media activist with Vancouver non-profit, OpenMedia.ca.
