Review: Friends In Bellwoods 2 release party @ Lee's Palace, 28 Aug.

On Friday night I went to one of the best shows I've been to all year. At Toronto's Lee's Palace I and several hundred others were treated to an excellently put together and performed show to celebrate the release of the Friends in Bellwoods 2 compilation. The evening featured Waterloo-based electro dance group Bocce, hometown favourites Ohbijou, the lovely Forest City Lovers, and the expanded band version of Jonas Bonnetta's solo project, Evening Hymns. I have seen all these bands before (though not Evening Hymns as a 7-piece), and went into the show expecting to have a nice time. I did not expect the musical spectacular that it turned out to be. Silly me.

I missed the first song or two of Evening Hymns' set, and when I got there the venue was already pretty busy. A good sign. Jonas was still playing that sparkly silver guitar I saw him use during a solo performance a few months back---good. The addition of Sylvie Smith (The Magic) on backing vocals, James Bunton (Ohbijou) on drums, Gavin Gardiner (The Wooden Sky) on guitar, Andrew Wyatt (The Wooden Sky) on bass, and others made for an impressive lineup. Mid-way through their set, Sylvie Smith took over lead vocals, singing her contribution to the compilation, "On Our Own." On the record, her voice is strong and clear; live, it was even better. A real standout track. Another inspired moment was when most of Jonas' band cleared off, making way for the members of The D'Urbervilles, dressed up to mimic their friend Taylor Kirk (Timber Timbre), whose song "Magic Arrow" they covered for the album. And so they performed it for us. Great stuff.

Jonas recently arranged for Out of This Spark records to release his next album, coming out on 3 November. Promises to be a good one. Listen to "Dead Deer" on his MySpace. Or just watch this live video, taken by Colin Medley at a Wavelength show a while back:

Next up was Forest City Lovers, one of the top local folk-pop acts. This band had fewer tricks up its sleeves, but did bring in extra strings for a few songs (Jenny Mecija and Anissa Hart from Ohbijou). More importantly, the band performed a strong set with their full lineup. It was nice to see them sound so good and seem so confident in their set. Good! I like this band a lot, but the stars never fully align whenever I see them live. Friday night, they did. They played their track off the compilation---"Minneapolis," which also kicks off the preview podcast I did last week---as well as songs from their recordings. Look for a new 7" from the band sometime in the next few months.

The biggest draw of the night was Ohbijou, a band that's had a lot of successes over the past year, building on a longer history of community involvement and strong musicianship. I missed out on their CD release show earlier this summer, so tonight was my chance to get up to speed on how the band's been doing. And, well, they were great. I've sometimes found Ohbijou's recorded output hard to really get into. I am a fan of the folkier indie rock out there, but for a some reason Ohbijou never did it for me as much as it does for so many other people. Friday night was the moment when things clicked between me and the band. Casey Mecija and the rest of her bandmates seemed really excited for the event, and their energy added sparkle to their quiet songs. The didn't play too many of their own songs, calling up guests---Nils Edenloff (The Rural Alberta Advantage); Reg Vermue and Kelly McMichael (Gentleman Reg); Basia Bulat; and others---to sing and play with them, and it all made the set more festive. Consider me now much more firmly in the fan category.

At this point things could have ended, but no: the event's organizers had one more band for us. Bocce took to the stage ready to get the real party started. And my oh my did they ever. The dance floor was hopping and the guys seemed not at all phased to be playing to such a large crowd after such brilliant sets of music. I hung back near the soundboard, but it gave me the perfect sightline to witness the craziness of Casey, Kat Burns (Forest City Lovers), and Greg Santilly (The D'Urbervilles) rapping. During the encore, seemingly everyone who had performed that night, and even some who hadn't, piled on stage, jumping up and down and having a blast. So was everyone in the audience. Take a look for yourself.

What a great night of music. You can purchase a copy of the 40-song double-disk compilation from a variety of actual and virtual stores. All proceeds go to the Toronto Daily Bread Food Bank. Details here.

Kat Burns talks about Forest City Lovers & New 7" at Canadian Interviews

Canadian Interviews has a nice interview up with Kat Burns of Forest City Lovers. FCL are in the process of recording a new album right now, but one of the things discussed in the interview is a forthcoming 7" that will tide fans over until the new album is ready:
"Currently the band is making a seven-inch record with a view to a fall release, and plans for a new full-length album are in the works. In support of the Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto, a new song, ‘Minneapolis’, has been contributed to the forty-track compilation album Friends in Bellwoods II, alongside songs by such acts as Ohbijou and Great Lake Swimmers. It will be available August 25, 2009. The original Friends in Bellwoods compilation, released in 2007, raised more than eleven thousand dollars for the cause. Certainly there is no shortage of activity as far as Forest City Lovers is concerned."
Burns also discusses everything from the song-writing process, to early influences, their European tour, Arts & Crafts distribution, and pretty much everything else you might want to know about Kat or the Forest City Lovers.

By the way, did you know that Kat Burns also directs some of the Forest City Lovers videos - like this one

Zunior 5th Anniversary (Dog is Blue, Forest City Lovers, Entire Cities, etc.) @ the Tranzac June 27. 2009

Sadly, I missed out on both the Ohbijou CD Release on Thursday and the Sunparlour Players CD Release on Friday, which was really unfortunate, but a man's gotta eat... but, despite my disappointment at missing both of those shows, the Zunior 5th Anniversary Show/Party/Extravaganza was on at the Tranzac on Saturday night. The show was appealing for a number of reasons, including, but not limited to: it started at a reasonable time (9pm), which meant that I was going to get home at a reasonable time (before the subway stops); the Tranzac is a great sit down venue; and there were at least a few bands that I was pretty keen on seeing.

Aside from the smell (TO garbage strike + heat + crowded house + not enough A/C = big tyme stink), the night was set to go quite well.

(the shadow to the left is Laura and the shadow to the right is Paul)
Dog is Blue, 9:15 Acoustic Room

B/c of the number of bands and the amount of stuff going on Paul Watson and Laura (Dog is Blue) ended up without mics in the acoustic room for their set... c'est la vie... it actually didn't matter so much. In fact, I'd almost go so far as to say as it added a degree of 'authenticity' to the performance.

Their songs, which typically consist of guitars, keyboard, and a variety of music toys, sounded terrific in the tiny room at the front of the Tranzac. For whatever reason, their songs - live - really resonated with me, and I caught myself humming 'Seacaptain' (probably my favourite) on my way home. At this point I'm projecting this as a sleeper for a year end top 10...

Forest City Lovers, 9:40 Main Room

Had heard a lot of good things about this band, have their 2nd album Haunted Moon Sinking on my computer, but never really listened to it. After their set last night, I daresay it'll be getting a few more (metaphorical) spins. The band has a sound that is relatively similar to Ohbijou - sweet female vocals, strings - but, there is something a little darker about FCLs. At this point I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, but I do know they have my attention... and I also know that Liz really liked them... she says they were her favourite.

Entire Cities, 10:30 Front Room

Those of you who have been around for a while (say, more than a year) may remember (but likely won't) how much I enjoyed Entire Cities' Deep River (#20, 2008). So, it seems logical that I would really enjoy their set, and I did. They were great. They were energetic to say the least - breaking drum sticks and guitar strings - but weren't all go-go and had a really nice balance b/w that unbrideled energy, and a quiet, more intimate side.

I think for them to become a (inter)nationally recognized band they're going to have to polish things up a little bit (if that's what they're into), but they were really fun and I def. look forward to seeing them again/hearing a new album...

... and then, some time shortly after that, Liz and I went home...

But, I did catch snippets of Culture Reject and By Divine Right both of which I enjoyed and'll be interested in checking out in the future...

If you're interested in some mp3s from the show, you can catch them at the Burgeoning Metropolis blog.

I don't live in Peterborough and cannot see myself being in Peterborough on Thursday, but if I were in Peterborogh I would be going to Bluestreak Records (444 George St. North) at 4 pm for an instore performance featureing Weird Weather AND Forest City Lovers (Facebook Event here) - if you haven't heard them already you can hear Weird Weather on NxEW Mixtape Podcasts 4 and 6 and you can read a bit about them here as well. The Forest City Lovers, while we love them, haven't been on the podcast yet because they haven't loved us back yet (generally we get an email or something from the people on the podcast saying it's ok before we play them.) But if, for some reason, you're not familiar - the Forest City Lovers sound like this:

Huge Live Music Archive (thanks Tyler)

Tyler Wade of Two Way Monologues and Zygiella fame pointed me to an amazing archive of live recordings at soundmann.com. The recordings go back to a Chris Brown and Kate Fenner show in October of 2004. Sadly there is no RSS feed for the site so you'll just have to check it regularly for new stuff but it's all in MP3 format and it's all free.

There are way too many shows to list but they include

The Burning Hell. 2008 Jul 26. Hillside Festival, Guelph ON.

Rebekah Higgs. 2008 Jul 25. Hillside Festival, Guelph ON.

D'Urbervilles. 2008 Aug 17. Dog Day Afternoon, Fergus ON.

Caribou. 2008 Mar 19. Starlight, Waterloo ON.

Forest City Lovers. 2008 Mar 15. 130 King, Waterloo ON

Julie Doiron. 2007 Sep 16. Jane Bond, Waterloo ON

Rock Plaza Central. 2007 Jul 28. Hillside Festival, Guelph ON

and that, as I said barely begins to scratch the surface a little. Dig In!

Daps Duo and a Brace of Bucks!

The big news out of the second Daps Duo show yesterday was a new project from Kat Burns (of Forest City Lovers) which she says she is calling 'A Brace of Bucks' (sorry, nothing to link to yet.) Yesterday Burns and Emily Bennett debuted some of the material for the first time in front of an audience.

I'll definitely keep an ear to the ground and let you know when there is more info on the project.

Beyond that the Daps Duo show featured the Pixilators who I missed (sorry), Boxes and Bags who I didn't miss but the video I had sucked, Bonjay (video isn't great but it's here).

And all the way from Edmonton the super secret mystery guest turned out to be the Whitsundays!

Daps Duo all ages Saturday afternoons happen bi-mothlyish. So far they have been at Rolly's Garage on Ossington Street in Toronto. Unlike most shows they bring together people from across age lines and cultural lines for an eclectic mix of music in an alcohol free environment (though there is food and drink for cheap). Daps Duo II: All Ages at Rolly's Garage Next Saturday

The second (all ages) Daps Duo show is next Saturday (April 4, 09) at Rolly's Garage. All ages means you can bring the kiddies. There is no booze but if it's the same as the last one you can buy pizza by the slice, hot cocoa, candy and of course merch.

The lineup looks like this (I'm not sure about the order): Bonjay, Kat Burns (of Forest City Lovers playing solo), Boxes & Bags, Pixilators, DJ Jamal and a Super Secret Mystery Guest who will be announced at the show.

The whole thing kicks off at 12:30 and will be over at 4:30 - so you can still go out later if you wanna.

Rolly's Garage is an actual garage, not a bar with a clever ironic name, it's at 124 Ossington in T.O. and the Facebook Event Page is Here.
