For whatever reason the day after turkey day appears to be a favorite to unleash new stuff. It's seems odd to me - in the states it's the biggest xmas shopping day of the year, but Thanksgiving there is in late November. In Canada I'm not sure if people's attention is drawn to what new albums might be available - but apparently yours is if you're still reading this so it's also possible that the labels know something that I don't.
Said the Whale shouldn't need much of an introduction to NxEW readers. Their long awaited sophomore effort
'Islands Dissapear' is a great follow on their
'Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia' (actually a combo of earlier EPs). Check out their interview about it at
straight.com and my all time favorite Said the Whale interview by NxEW.ca's own
Naomi Kavka. You should also grab Said the Whale's
CBC Radio 3 session. Find out more at
myspace.com/saidthewhale and hear samples at
iTunes.
Carolyn Mark and NQ Arbuckle team up on her new album
Let's Just Stay Here which also features guest appearances by Corb Lund, Lily Fawn, Jenny Whitely and Miranda Mulholland all of which means a country-rock or rock country masterpiece:
"Not like AC/DC rock, more like Lucinda Williams/Wilco/Tom Petty rock.". Check the
Mint site or
myspace.com/carolynmark for details and
listen to samples on Zunior.
Little Girls The current
Toronto band not the Los Angeles band featured in
Valley Girl released their debut full length
'Concepts' today. You can read more about that at
Paper Bag and
Music Remedy - as a side note to publicists : never compare anything to Joy Division - it never holds up, even if you're talking about New Order (same pretty much holds for the Talking Heads and the Clash.) You can hear samples from this one at
Paper Bag.
Finally,
the Diableros who for a time almost weren't anymore are back with a new EP appropriately entitled
Old Story Fresh Road' that they are dropping tonight at the Boat in Toronto with Planet Creature and DJs Shady and Andy. You can hear tracks from the new Diableros EP at
myspace.com/thediableros.
You should also check out the new album from
Duplex! 'Worser' which features 8 members including Veda Hille, 11 year olds Sierra Terhoch, Saoirse Soley and three year old Abe Caruso as well as members of p:ano, Great Aunt Ida, the Beekeepers, and AC Newman's band. Check it out and hear samples at
Zunior.
And of course there's the much discussed new
Land of Talk EP which includes "includes 4 new songs, and 3 videos from songs off the album Some Are Lakes".
