Buck 65 to Score New Sook-Yin Lee Film

Definitely Not the Opera host Sook Yin-Lee's first feature film 'The Year of the Carnivore' is slated to debut at this year's Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and, according to Chartattack it will be scored by her CBC co-worker Drive host and legendary Nova Scotia musician Buck 65.

I have written before about the growing relationship between the booming Canadian music scene and Canada's smarter filmmakers, but neither Sook Yin-Lee nor Buck 65 (Rich Terfry) is a stranger to the overlap.

Buck 65 has previously scored the documentary Discordia and the French film L'histoire de Richard O. as well as the Side Street Project - a musical film with Terfry, Holy Fuck, and Emm Gryner.

Sook Yin-Lee has appeared in several films as well as writing and directing several shorts. Most recently she appeared in Short Bus along with Gentleman Reg and Lex Vaughn and featured music by the Hidden Cameras (amoung others) and starred in and directed a portion of Toronto Stories the soundtrack of which featured Final Fantasy, Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett, and Ohbijou. She has also been known to sing a bit herself have a listen at her Myspace. I'll even through in a music video before you're done reading this.

Year of the Carnivore "is a romantic-comedy-drama about a girl with an unrequited crush on a boy who thinks she's bad in bed, so she goes out to get more 'experience'" Additional information is available at yearofthecarnivore.com or on the Facebook Fan Page.

The film will premiere at the Varsity Theatre in Toronto on Thursday, September 10 additional screenings are scheduled for the following:
TIFF Press & Industry 1 - Friday September 11th - CUMBERLAND 1 - 2:00PM
TIFF Public 2 - Saturday September 12th - SCOTIABANK THEATRE 1 - 12:15PM
TIFF Public 1 (World Premiere) - VARSITY 8 - September 10 - 7:30PM

Because there doesn't seem to be a trailer available for the film here's a music video made by this guy for Sook Yin-Lee's song 'Knock Loud'

Rifflandia Music Fest Earlybird Wristbands and Lineup Announced!

So last year Victoria got a new music festival, it went by the name of Rifflandia and it rocked. I unfortunately did not get to go as I decided to enjoy the Yukon for a few extra days before it was back to school. This year however I fully intend on enjoying what will no doubt be a stellar festival full of fantastic talent. The festival will run September 24 - 27th and will feature the mad skillz of Tegan & Sara, Holy Fuck, Buck 65, Mother Mother, Champion, Final Fantasy, Beach House, Shad, Pink Mountaintops, and Mt. Saint Helens Vietnam Band(I hope all those links work, they took way too long to do) with more names to be announced on July 15th. Right now a limited quantity of earlybird wristbands have been released and will be available till July 14th. Wristbands will run you about 50 bucks including fees and are totally worth it. They'll get you into every venue as well as some bonus perks. Also Rifflandabrau will be brewed once again for your enjoyment and some special "twists" like the Rifflandia Drama Club and as well as an official festival magazine/guide book to be released in mid August.

And that's not all, Rifflandia is being held as a sister event to Transmission, an international music conference for all the movers and shakers of the industry. It looks to be pretty interesting and hopefully I'll be able to grab an invite for that so I can let you know what its all about.

All in all it looks like a pretty darn exciting weekend in Victoria. For more info you can check out the Rifflandia site here and the Transmission site here.

R3 @ SXSW

Personally I can't get excited about SXSW. I know that it's important for musicians. Finding an audience in the large and lucrative US market can mean the ability to quit their day jobs. Still it is very far away from me and I can't imagine myself willingly going to Texas unless I was being paid to go.

That said, they're still our bands and we still love them. Radio 3 has been all over SXSW; blogging, Tweeting and recording. Over on the Radio 3 blog there are recordings of live performances by Winter Gloves, Ohbijou, Woodhands, and Thunderheist and Boats, the Details, Bedouin Soundclash and Immaculate Machine.

They also have some video going on on their YouTube Channel from Arkells, the Wet Secrets, More or Les, Elliott Brood and Jenn Grant w/ Buck 65.
