Revised Podcast Guidelines

When I say this is the revised podcasting policy it's actually replacing a general lack of policy. We always got permission for things but that was part of the problem. There were times when I spend weeks trying to get permission for a song only to finally here - "sure, please do." - It would be one thing if I ever got a 'No!' but the closest to that we ever got was "can you play this song instead?" and that has been very rare (once so far). So, going forward this is how I'll work things:

  • If we already have an arrangement, don't worry. We'll stick to the original arrangement.
  • If we don't already have an arrangement I'll assume that songs posted for free download, or posted for download on legitimate music blogs (not the ones that offer up entire albums without permission) such as herohill, I (Heart) Music, Chromewaves, Narratives etc., are ok to play. I'll also assume that songs posted in free samplers - like those on the Line of Best Fit or Zunior.com are good to play.
  • If you're an artist or you represent some and the above isn't ok with you and you want a different arrangement, please get in touch at [email protected]
  • If you're a Canadian artist, or represent some and want to get in on the podcast feel free to get in touch at [email protected]. The easiest way to get them to us is to send a download link, but if that doesn't work we'll figure something out. You should also know that just because you send in something doesn't mean that it will be on the podcast. There are currently 19,467 Canadian artists listed on CBC Radio 3's new music Canada site. Those artists have uploaded 86,201 tracks - that is not all of the artists in Canada (there are some not on Radio 3) and it is far from being all of the songs available. Our podcast runs an hour per week. Other than a brief intro there is no talking so there's room for more music but there are still limits to what we can fit.
