More Zygiella: Wade Tyler and Jen talk about Wayne Petti

Wade Tyler and Jen take another whack at goings on in the Toronto Music Scene in the recent past and the recent future, discuss Jen's Wayne Petti issues and play some music by Key Witness, Wayne Petti, DD/MM/YYY, At Odds With Even, Chang-A-Lang and Dog is blue:

Download it Here

You can also download Part II of Jen's adventures in talking to people at NXNE
I got home really late on Wednesday night, but I was keen to get an early afternoon start on the official first day of the festival. I started at the Hyatt Regency, where I picked up my press pass and chatted with Fezz Stenton from Green Go. Then I sat in on the round table discussion featuring a dozen members of the (mainstream) Canadian music industry. I took a breather after that bizarre session to debrief with Leif Vollebekk, Scott Bouwmeester, and Stefan Banjevic. After seeing Dinosaur Bones perform a spirited set at Sunrise Records, I interviewed a couple members of that band, Joe Strutt from Mechanical Forest Sound, and NOW Magazine's Jordan Bimm. Spiral Beach was by then entertaining a good crowd at Yonge-Dundas Square, where I talked to Elvis Mondays' William New and Bo and Brandon from La Casa Muerte. Featuring songs by Green Go ("Brains For Breakfast"), Leif Vollebekk ("Northernmost Eva Maria"), Kids on TV ("Breakdance Hunx"), Parallels ("Reservoir"), Dinosaur Bones ("Life In Trees"), The Swallows ("Glorious"), and La Casa Muerte ("Cut It Out").

And, as always, there are Jen's listings of the shows you should check out in Toronto this week.

Zygiella Podcast: The One Where Jen Goes to NXNE and Talks to People

In the most recent Zygiella podcast the world famous (on the internets) Jen talks to people at NXNE. Most of them apparently don't realize how famous she is. But it breaks down like this:
My festival started at the launch party at the Berkeley Church on Queen East. I caught up with some friends, met a few new people, and had a couple free beers. Sufficiently tipsy, a friend and I cabbed over to the Drake to see the City Sonic films (really well done), and catch sets by J. J. Ipsen, The D'Urbervilles, Lioness, and Woodhands. I spoke with Tim Bruton and John O'Regan from The D'Urbervilles, Ming Wu, a photoblogger from Ottawa and first-time NxNEr, and Garry Tsaconas, a local photographer and avid show-goer. Featuring songs by The D'Urbervilles ("Worst Case Ontario [feat. New Slang and Green Go]," and Woodhands ("Electric Avenue [Eddy Grant cover]"). Hope you enjoy it!
Apparently there are more of these to come.

Olenka and the Autumn Lovers at NXNE

The motivation for starting NXEW was something like this: Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver (and their surrounding suburbs) are the places where Canada's professional music press is concentrated. These cities (and their suburban areas) may well have 1/4 of Canada's population but that means that 3/4 of Canada's population is not being well covered by the music press.

Early validation of this idea came from Olenka and the Autumn Lovers out of London, Ontario whose fusion of Eastern European folk and indie rock sensibilities brought them quickly onto the radar at NXEW. They have appeared on our Podcast 3 times now and are firmly in the top 40 of our shadow Polaris voting.

As if that wasn't enough London's Open House Arts Collective (with which Olenka & Co. are affliated) then cranked out a CD Sampler that clearly demonstrates that there are several other amazingly talented bands sitting under the national music press radar in London.

(As an added bonus for NxEW Paterson Hodgson of Olenka and the Autumn Lovers, State Bird of Idaho and sometimes others is a occasional contributor to this site.)

So all of this led me to take a pass on Jason Collett at the Horseshoe and run down to Bread and Circus' in Kensington Market to catch Olenka and the Autumn Lovers live for the first time: They didn't disappoint. Any day now the national press will wake up and notice them and wonder where they came from and how they managed to get out a full length and two EPs (2 more EPs if you count Olenka's solo work) without them noticing. As I said at the start - the Canadian music scene is 4x the size that the national press previously thought: there will be many surprises for them along the way.

Pick A Piper at NXNE (sort of)

One of the buzz bands of this year's Pitter Patter Festival was Pick A Piper - I've heard numerous people refer to them as "my favorite new band". It's not that surprising I suppose - Carribou won last year's Polaris prize and the rhythm heavy Holy Fuck was nominated (and was my personal favorite for the prize). Pick A Piper is described by themselves as
"A collective featuring Brad Weber of Caribou, Angus Fraser of Tenth of May, Dan Roberts ex-Winter Equinox and Clint Scrivener.

Layer after layer of unhinged tribal rhythms collide with catchy basslines, chugging guitar and many textural overlays. The music mashes campfire singalongs, drum circles, nimble editing and an overall danceable feel that causes you to involuntarily bob your head."
I finally caught them for the first time during NXNE (though again it wasn't an official NXNE event. It was at Rolly's Garage - the same place where I Laura Barrett and their set, in part, went something like this:

NXNE: Leeroy Stagger, The Cadillac Lounge

There are pluses and minuses to big music festivals like NXNE. Plus: awesome bands and artists come to town. Minus: You have to get to the venue hours early and endure sweaty hipsters just to see these acts. The latter is one of reasons why I decided to skip a lot of the hyped artists that I wanted to see, and headed straight for the Cadillac Lounge on Friday, June 19.

The Caddy is on West Queen West and if you blink you may miss it. Their clientele consists of mostly people in jeans, plaid, and T-shirts, and there is nearly always an old coot sitting alone drinking a pitcher of beer by himself, yelling, "You damn kids, get the hell out of my way! I can't see the band!" No popped collars or ironic mustaches in sight. And, no wait to get in.

When I strolled in, singer/songwriter Tim Easton of Joshua Tree, California, was saying "Hi" to his good friend Leeroy Stagger. Stagger is originally from rural British Columbia, and got his start in Victoria, BC, by touring with Hot Hot Heat. He currently resides in Lethbridge, Alberta. Last year Easton, Stagger, and Alaskan Evan Phillips put out an album entitled One For the Ditch, which garnered a lot of praise in the alt country music community.

Stagger and his band The Wildflowers (Kevin Kane on lead electric guitar, Ian Browne on drums, and Tyson Maiko on bass) took the stage five minutes early (how organized is The Caddy?), after a wonderful blues set by Easton. They blasted through a ten song set that was mostly from Stagger's new album Everything is Real. The songs ranged from mournful country ("Red Bandana") to blues-based rock ("Hell of a Life") to punk ("Everything is Real"). Stagger swapped between acoustic and electric guitars, while Kane had some blistering electric guitar solos, and Maiko head-banged to the beat. Stagger even got the old coot up and dancing with a smoldering cover of Warren Zevon's "Lawyers, Guns, and Money."

Another plus about NXNE is finding the hidden gems that nobody really knows about. This was certainly true for Leeroy Stagger. The minus is that his showcase was over way too soon. But that is OK, Stagger plays in Toronto again tonight, Wednesday, June 24, at the Dakota Tavern (late set).

More Canadian Dates
June 25 - Blacksheep Inn, Wakefield, QC
June 26 - The Living Room, Kingston, ON
July 4 - Golden Spike Days, Port Moody, BC

Set List

2. Petrified World
3. Hell of a Life

6. Everything is Real

9. Lawyers, Guns, and Money (Warren Zevon cover)

NxNE Wrap-Up.

I managed to see more than 30 bands at this year's festival. For the most part, I stayed for full sets, though I got in late to a small handful of them. Here's the complete rundown, from start to finish:

WEDNESDAY

J. J. Ipsen @ The Drake Hotel (Underground)
The D'Urbervilles @ The Drake Hotel (Underground) -- love these guys
Lioness @ The Drake Hotel (Underground)
Woodhands @ The Drake Hotel (Underground) -- had me dancing for an hour despite my exhaustion

THURSDAY

Dinosaur Bones (in-store) @ Sunrise Records -- reminded me that I do really like this band
Spiral Beach @ Young-Dundas Square -- fun!
Zeus @ The Courthouse -- really good classic rock with new-indie infusion (to my mind)
Flotilla @ Rancho Relaxo -- charmed and pleasantly surprised me
The Most Serene Republic @ The Courthouse -- I wanted to like this set more than I did
You Say Party! We Say Die! @ El Mocambo (Downstairs) -- really fun, better live than on their records
Green Go @ El Mocambo (Downstairs) -- all the people who left after YSP!WSD! missed out
Zoobombs @ The Silver Dollar Room -- blistering performance
The Schomberg Fair @ Lee's Palace -- fantastic performance, new songs sound great

FRIDAY

Green Go @ Yonge-Dundas Square (side stage) -- had me dancing in the sunshine
Black Hat Brigade @ Yonge-Dundas Square (side stage) -- so many people!
Parlovr @ Supermarket -- I loved their somewhat unpolished sound and great energy
Zeroes @ The Silver Dollar Room -- had some great moments
Dinosaur Bones @ The Horseshoe Tavern -- great, I hope they had people talking afterward
Mika Miko @ Sneaky Dee's -- unmemorable for me, but I don't have much experience with punk rock (and they played for no more than 20 minutes)
The Sadies @ El Mocambo (Downstairs) -- amazing!
These Are Powers @ The Silver Dollar Room -- HOLY HECK, their primal electro dance grooves had me dancing like a maniac
Mark Berube & the Patriotic Few @ Rancho Relaxo -- played until past 4am with a good chunk of people still dancing

SATURDAY

Laura Barrett @ Rolly's Garage -- enchanting, perfect (except for that weird guy who interrupted her set)
Boxes & Bags @ secret/not-so-secret afterparty -- terrible technical troubles, but they got something
Japanther @ secret/not-so-secret afterparty --wow, was not expecting this!
DD/MM/YYYY @ secret/not-so-secret afterparty --I was distracted doing door duties, unfortunately, 'cause this is a great live band

After that I caught snippets of Steamboat and Gravity Wave at another secret/not-so-secret afterparty.

SUNDAY

Candy Coated Killahz @ Yonge-Dundas Square -- unoriginal, but when I turned off my music-snob brain they were pretty fun
Mardeen @ Rancho Relaxo -- really good Canadiana pop-rock, made me happy
Brent Randall & his Pinecones @ Rancho Relaxo -- 60s pop, much fun
Diamond Rings @ The Rivoli -- so much better than the last time I saw him, really solid performance
PS I Love U @ The Rivoli -- my friends have been talking this band up for months, and they are right
Wax Mannequin @ Sneaky Dee's -- great
La Casa Muerte @ Sneaky Dee's -- their energy was infectious, even though they claimed to be really low energy that night

All-in-all, I saw 15 bands that I've seen before, and 16 bands that I hadn't. None of the performances were disappointing, though in a few cases I wanted to like the bands more than I did. The best: These Are Powers. The worse: Candy Coated Killahz. But considering both those bands had me dancing despite my sore feet and general tiredness, I really can't complain. What a great five days of music! I learned a lot about a lot of things, including that I need to get out to see more electro bands. I love them so.

[I went to see Hank & Lily @ The Drake Hotel (Underground) on Monday night, just 'cause I'm nuts.]

I did a bunch of interviews during the festival, so stay tuned for a few special NxNE podcasts with all those plus more than 2 hours of great music!

NXNE Was A Hit!

The past week (June 17th to 21st) Toronto hosted NXNE. This is a major music and film festival\conference that has people coming from all over the world to partake. I had the pleasure of covering this festival and I was pleased with not only the organization on NXNE and Flip Publicities part but also the talent that was in attendance.

Here are my highlights of NXNE.

NXNE opening night gala on Wednesday June 17th was held at The Berkley Church and was an invite only. This event had many faces in the music industry in attendance. The buzz about the festival was rampant throughout the room with everyone talking about must-sees.

There was a skulls exhibit on one side of the room which got me to thinking... do you think that the person(s) whose skulls they once belonged to would have approved with say having a steel Mohawk or dressed up to look like an African voodoo witch? Imagine donor cards with 3 options now Organs, Body for Science, Skull for Art. Either way it was very interesting.

On the stage was top tattoo artists working together to create a large piece of artwork. I couldn’t get a real good look because the artists were all surrounding the piece, obviously working on it. Would have been interesting to see the end result.

From there I headed to The Dakota Tavern to check out what bands they had in store for opening night. The Dakota Tavern is a great little venue located at Dundas and Ossington. When I arrived Treasa Levasseur (Toronto, ON) was on stage with 2 saxophone players, drums, guitars, bass, and 2 keyboards. The sound was phenomenal and the energy was buzzing in this great little tavern. Treasa has a voice that can literally give you goose bumps. She grinds it out R&B, blues style like no one I have seen before. It was real treat to walk into.

Next up was David Baxter who is a regular at Dakota for stepping on the stage with many talented acts. But this time it was David with his own backing band. And 2 words – well done! I for one cannot wait to hear more from David. Not only can this man play the guitar but he can also sing! Good old sweet rocking country is what David Baxter brings to the stage.

Last but never least The Beauties took the stage at 3am. I have seen The Beauties at The Dakota Tavern a few times before and they never fail to get the audience to their feet screaming for more of that rockabilly blues sound. They are Toronto’s own little gem. They don’t tour, they don’t even have a Myspace page but by far they are one of the best live bands that you can find in Toronto.

Thursday June 18th the rest of the 50 venues opened their doors for music. Planning what show to attend was one of the hardest things to do at NXNE. Cause you know the drinking and dancing till 4am isn’t hard, it is finding where to do it. As well as having a job also during this week was another drawback for many I am guessing. Working late and missing shows or just having to leave early so you can get your ass out of bed the next morning for work was a huge downer for many of us.

And of course Thursday night I had to work late and missed the return of one of my favorite bands to Toronto – Yellow Wood. Yellow Wood played at Rancho Relaxo’s on College on Thursday for a great crowd and I missed it, balls! See how life can be so unfair when you have a job to pay bills. Anyway, when I got there the boys from the band were still hanging around so I was able to chat and snag an EP from them. The band consists of 2 brothers and a friend from Windsor, Ontario and they have a sound that is reminiscent of Radiohead meets Coldplay and I mean that in the best absolute way possible.

I did however get to hear Rah Rah (Regina, SK) and Wildlife (Toronto, ON). Rah Rah has been compared to Arcade Fire and as Dan Wolovick put it “Arcade Fire for one song but the next is something all different”. So you know you’re in for a sound that is not one long Nickleback song. Wildlife is best described as rock meets pop for some pop n’ rocking beats. Don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself. They will be back to Rancho’s on July 25th for another show.

I then did a quick jaunt over to Lee’s Palace and caught the end of the special guest show with, Elliott Brood. This is a man who can rock it out sitting down. I only made it to see the last song but from the sweat on stage and in the audience I am sure I missed a good one.

However, up after Elliott Brood was the alt rock country Toronto band The Schomberg Fair. I have seen The Schomberg Fair play some great sets in Toronto before and there are reasons I always come back for more.
Reason 1, Matt the singer\guitar player has the energy of a 12 year old.
Reason 2, Nate the 2nd vocals\bass player has one of the deepest voices I have ever heard, besides the guy from Sha Na Na.
Reason 3, Pete the drummer keeps the boys together with the quick beats of his drums.
Want to stomp and drink then go see these boys because you will be sweating and begging for more!

Friday June 19th was El Mocambo(down) for me. And I think that a lot of people felt the same because it was a packed crowd. I got there just in time for the 10pm show which was Toronto band Songs From A Room. Good old loud rock n’ roll with a very happy bass player and transitive beats.

11pm Burning Brides took the stage. This bands reigns from Los Angeles whom seemed to have a great following in this area. Singer could belt out the sounds with hair to match it, big hair – big voice. Burning Brides has a female bass player, which is always a treat for me. Sporting cute pigtails and schoolgirl looks with a happy smile. However, that is where the simile ends because she could rock with the big boys. We have been told as a country that we are very reserved when in attendance at a concert. Well I did see more then a dozen feet stomping and heads banging to this band. So either they are good; or they brought their friends from across the border.

Next up was what I believe was one of the highlights of the festival for me. Melissa Auf Der Maur, and not because I think chick bass players are cool (cause they are) but she is a rock n’ roller that has seen and done what many of us could only dream about. Melissa was the bass player for Hole (Courtney Love band) and also worked with Smashing Pumpkins for a record. All this from a lovely red headed girl from Montreal. Since leaving her great past behind she has a solo album out and on this night at El Mocambo she took the stage to show us reserved Canadians what she had to offer. And we responded with welcome arms. I crown Melissa Auf Der Maur the new Lee Arron of our time. Rock on!

The night ended with The Sadies and Bionic. Rumor has it that this was one of Bionic’s last show and I have just one word – boooooooooo! Bionic you will be missed.

Saturday June 20th after getting my ass kicked and stomped at Edgefest I made it out alive to head back to NXNE. And I welcomed the warm dry venues, with beers under 5 dollars and toilets that could flush (for the most part).

9pm at Rancho’s I was ready to hear After the Weather, which was quite appropriate name for what I endured on a rainy muddy day at Downsview Park. After the Weather is from Montreal so you know they are going to be good. I am just enthralled by all the talent that Montreal has to offer. Some of my favorite bands come from the great French city that wants to leave us. But whatever, that is another story, because tonight Montreal was with us. After the Weather was best described in the NXNE booklet “if you like bone chilling sonic punk opera”. Seriously I can’t say it any better then that. The drummer loved to hit those drums so hard that at one point I swear he was going to lose his arm through his drums. He did lose his seat and wound up on the floor at one point, almost taking out the curtains and NXNE banner on stage. The singers voice reminded me of a young Jeff Buckely very hypnotizing, very sexy. Meanwhile the bass player would chime in with some yodeling or opera screams that at first was like “what the hell?” but whatever, it totally worked. Great performance by all.

Lovely Killbots from Toronto hit the stage after After the Weather and they are no strangers to Rancho’s. Piano and drum duo with the lovely Lauralee’s voice to send chills up and down your spine.

Audioporn was a no show so in their spot was Armies of You. A UK band that had a very soothing sound and as the sound tech put it a David Bowie thing going on. Enjoyable and fantastic.

The clock strikes midnight and next up is Toronto's own The Speaking Tongues. Now if you are from Toronto and have never seen The Speaking Tongues then shame on you. This twosome never fails to deliver a good time. With a blues rocking sound that will get your feet stomping. And hey look at that, Canadians you do know how to rock out! Seriously, The Speaking Tongues always, always deliver and never fail to get your fists pumping and feet jumping. At one point I was going back and forth with the sound tech, this is my favorite song, then the next one came on and it was like wait this is my favorite one. You know what how about every song is my favorite one. Yes The Speaking Tongues rocked the house!

Next up was Nightwood, another gem from Montreal. I mean wow Montreal I bow down to the talent that you consistently give us.

Finally the night ended with Hank Pine and Lily Fawn, also known as The Hank and Lily Show from BC. Two words – holy shit. This band has originality not only in their music but their performance. They are here to entertain and they get it done. What a great ending to a great night of some amazing musicians. They started their set from the back of the room walking up to the stage chanting “Don’t Be Afraid”. The eeriness in the room with Hank dressed in a gas mask and Lily’s pitchy voice was a contradiction to the words of the song. The stage was set with Hank booming over the crowd in his large black hat and gas mask with 3 back up singers in platinum and black wigs, bass player as well in a gas mask and Lily on stand up drums (Sheila E style – awesome). The crowd was on their feet enjoying the theatrics and music. The Hank and Lily Show killed it.

Sunday June 21st was the last day of NXNE and I didn’t make it out of bed until Monday, HA! Drinking till 4am every night coupled with the energy of the audience and bands is really exhausting. I think my liver and ears were bleeding for me to stop after the 3rd night but I couldn't say no. NXNE is only once a year so damn it I am going to give it!
Kudos to all the artists, musicians, volunteers, booking agents and etc. for a great NXNE show. This was a great event and I for one am proud that I was part of it.
Thanks NXNE! Is it June 2010 yet?

The Boycott that Wasn't

This morning I logged onto Twitter and found this from CBC Radio 3's Grant Lawrence:
"Did Canadian music blog @nxew really boycott #nxne?! why?!?"
I had no idea this was a question. Nowhere on the blog, or anywhere else as far as I know, did anyone say that we were boycotting. There were in fact several - posts - promoting NXNE Events and encouraging people to attend - including people who couldn't be in Toronto. I even said last night several hours before Grant's post:
"Yesterday (Saturday, June 20, 2009) NxEW.ca turned 3 months old. Of course yesterday was also the biggest day of the North by North East music festival (because I'm in Toronto) that means I am playing catch up. Starting a few weeks before the festival began I was deluged with email and requests pertaining to the festival. I still have alot of email to wade through and several hours of video to check."
So I was really surprised by the question and responded:
"@GrantLCBCR3 @adammacisaac @unjoyeuxluron - No @NxEW didn't boycott #nxne - where did that come from? - JB"
Note: @adammacissac and @unjoyeuxluron were not a part of the rumor, they simply re-tweeted Grant's question and so were included in the response.

There was no direct answer to the question and to the best of my knowledge no one involved with NxEW.ca was asked about the rumor before hand. Grant has asked if I'd be interested in being on this afternoon's show to talk about it, I've responded with a definite maybe and haven't heard anything since (though I asked again where it was coming from.

I was, as a matter of fact at CBC Radio 3's NXNE Showcase on Saturday - I didn't talk to Grant but I did run into Craig Norris. I was really impressed with the crowd chanting "CBC" have a look (part of the several hours of video I mentioned)):

So, no idea where this is coming from and may or may not be on Radio 3 talking about it this afternoon, but I'd really love to hear where this is coming from. I sincerely hope that there is a good source for it and it's not just unsubstantiated crap to give Radio 3 something to talk about. I mean, it is unsubstantiated (and untrue), but given that I talked to someone at Radio 3 at NXNE on Saturday I hope that there is a point to this exercise.

It's bad enough that the MMVA's were allowed to be turned into the Great American Douche Fest - Canadian music doesn't need the National Enquirer treatment.

However, I'm more of a fan of letting you hear the music for yourself than trying to talk you into liking it. So, I'll just tempt you into listening with a few lines from their bio:
"When you fix up a trained classical guitarist who loves underground hip-hop, with a double bassist into Strauss & Mahler but obsessed with alt-rock, to a keyboardist perfecting her singer songwriter craft and join a drummer who has dabbled in everything from free-jazz to folk; what would you expect to hear?
Vancouver based Language-Arts have woven an intricate spread of sounds that have taken them from coast to coast, winning them a widespread of appeal."
Then I'll just let you listen a bit:
