Vote in our Shadow Polaris Poll: The Top 20
I am very happy with and proud of our top 20, these are all great albums. With that said the lack of hip hop and the lack of Francophone music is not lost on me. What it says is that we need more people who can write with passion and authority on these topics (I cannot). Unfortunately I have no direct control there - this is a volunteer run site and if people don't volunteer the music they love doesn't get covered. Enough of that for now though:
We will now begin the process, with your help, of narrowing 20 great albums down to 10 great albums. Voting will remain open from now until midnight on August 15 when this list will be trimmed to our Shadow Polaris Short List and then the final round of voting will begin.

I definitely like the official and shadow Polaris lists for very different reasons... In my opinion, the official was good for recognizing excellent work by already established (and loved) artists, whereas the NxEW list is great for discovering artists that I haven't given an ear to yet.

It's very cool to see the different perspectives. Thanks for putting in the work to make this happen.
Maybe it's just me but I always partially attribute the lack of diversity just being a numbers game. "Indie rock" is just a major style in Canada, it's what the majority of our artists can be labeled under. We definitely have some good hip-hop, electro and what have you but it's just not as prevalent in what is being produced and on the flip side, what is being searched out.
Still, I like the shadow list. Very nice although sad to see Bend Sinister no longer up there.
in my unhappiness with the short list, i never even thought that laura barrett was passed over for the long. thanks for throwing this shadow!
