I may not agree with all of their picks (ok I don't) and I see some glaring omissions but I'm coming from an entirely different place than the folks at Exclaim. In facilitating NxEW I do my best to keep track of hundreds of Canadian bands (large, small, even smaller and 'haven't released anything or done a real tour yet'). In doing so I sacrifice most of the time I might have for international artists. There are only so many hours in the day and with 20 thousand plus Canadian acts out there I've become a bit of a specialist, for better or worse.
But more back to the point that the headline advertises. Exclaims need to come up with special categories other than traditional genres and the fact that, for example, Japandroids, Flaming Lips, Wax Mannequin, Young Galaxy, Wilco, Handsome Furs, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Dirty Projectors are all included in the single "Pop Rocks" category are further evidence that genre is losing all meaning and that, as it always should have been, each band and it's sound must be judged on their own merits and not within the confines of genre.
Genres, after all, were only ever a way to organize record stores and never really served another purpose (unless you're in marketing.)
