Radio
WELCOME TO THE INTERNET! You are no longer limited by your radio dial. Keep reading to find out how to get over 120 channels of nearly commercial free Canadian Radio from across the country on your computer.
The first thing you are going to need is a media player such as iTunes, VLC media player, both of which will work with PC or Mac and are free. It also apparently works with Winamp though I don't really know.
You should also check out some of the software available at all-steaming-media.com - which lets you do things like record radio as mp3s and take it with you (or create your own podcast). Some of the software will even make seperate .mp3s of every song played (that's right - radio is now efficient file sharing software.)
Ok, you're more than halfway there. Now you just need some stations to play.
I've gathered, to the best of my ability, the .m3u and .pls files that will allow internet radio to play in iTunes or VLC. Some stations still use windows media files or real media, these do not work and those stations have sadly not been included. I mentioned above that all of this is nearly commercial free. That's because I have gathered files, exclusively, from public broadcasters, campus and community stations. So, depending on their licence, some of these stations may play a few commercials but generally not.
So get some radio stations
- Click here to download all of the stations at once
- Click here to download just the CBC (english) stations
- Click here to download just the SRC (CBC French) stations
- Click here to download just the Campus and Community Stations
- Pick and choose individual stations from the list below.
Now that you've got some stations you need to build a playlist - First take the folder with your stations in it and put it somewhere convenient in case you want to amend or edit it later.
If you are using iTunes create a new playlist, open the folder where the radio station files you downloaded are and then drag and drop the files into the new playlist.
If you are using VLC Player open the controller and drop the radio station files you downloaded into the controller and then save as something you'll remember.
If you are using something else (Winamp for example) then do whatever you do with winamp.
There! You're done. All the free, commercial free, independent Canadian radio you can eat!
