Bruce Cockburn, Lake of Stew and Other's This Week on Canada Live

This is the weekly thing where I tell you what's coming up on Canada Live, or rather I pass it along. Every weeknight Canada Live on CBC Radio 2 brings you live concerts recorded all over Canada. Someone at Radio 2 passes the list on to me, and I pass it on to you.

Monday, November 23, 2009
concert 1: Joyce Moreno
recorded at Performance Works on Granville Island as part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival
Joyce Moreno (formerly known simply as "Joyce") is one of Brazil's hidden treasures. This was her first time in Canada in a career that started in the 1960s. Her music bridges several styles, including samba, bossa nova, Música Popular Brasileira (MPB), and jazz. The late, great Antonio Carlos Jobim said that Joyce Moreno is "one of the greatest singers of all time… As if it weren't enough, Joyce is a great composer and plays all that guitar! What an uncanny little woman!"
concert 2: Projet Philou
recorded at the Jazz en rafales Festival in Montreal, April 2009
Last year, 16 Canadian jazz pianists participated in "Berceuses pour Philou", a charity CD to raise funds for the Centre de Répit PHILOU, a respite centre for severely handicapped children under the age of 5. This benefit concert from Montreal's Jazz en rafales Festival takes the Philou project a few musical steps further, with duos, trios, and more. An all-star line-up, featuring Francois Bourassa, Lorraine Desmarais, Min Rager, and Coral Egan.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009
concert 1: Harry Manx
Life on the road - it seems Harry Manx wouldn't be without it. Touring has taken Harry to 4 continents and he's not stopping there. When Harry does arrive in your town, it's like enjoying a favourite meal with an old friend, only this time he's spicing it up with few different ingredients. CBC Radio recorded this concert very early in Harry's "Bread & Buddha" CD release tour: this CD is Harry's ninth album. In addition to his solo shows this Fall, Harry's been touring with Richie Havens; yes, THE Richie Havens, the opening act at Woodstock in 1969. Tonight, Harry serves up solo material -- some tasty favourites garnished with a few new songs.

Wednesday, November 25, 2009
concert 1: Lake of Stew and Annabelle Chvostek
recorded for The Routes_Montreal series at The Segal Centre in Montreal
Take one cup of urban bluegrass, mix in a few tablespoons of nouveau country and folk, and you'll have a great evening of music. Lake of Stew began as a friendly get-together of musical friends in a Montreal apartment. Their songs deal with the trials and tribulations of living in a city where buses are always late and where winters always come too early. Their new CD, Sweet as Pie, was released hours before this performance, and was produced by Canadian folk legend Ken Whiteley.
Annabelle Chvostek mixes it up with The Stew in the second half - but before she does you'll hear why she's regarded as one of Canada's most passionate and intelligent singer-songwriters. Even before her involvement with The Wailin' Jennys a couple of years ago, Chvostek was a Montreal favourite wherever she performed. Tonight Lake of Stew and Annabelle Chvostek deliver an intimate and fun evening, as you might expect from two old friends.

Thursday, November 26, 2009
concert 1: Bruce Cockburn
recorded at Showplace Theatre in Peterborough, Ontario
Bruce Cockburn has been performing for over 35 years, and during that time he has been equally respected for his charitable and activist work. In 2001, Bruce was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. He is also an Officer of the Order of Canada and has honorary degrees in Letters and Music from numerous North American universities, including Berklee and Toronto's York University. Bruce Cockburn has 20 gold and platinum awards and 11 Junos - and he shows no sign of slowing down. Canada Live was thrilled to be able to record Bruce Cockburn as he performed solo at the Showplace Performance Centre in Peterborough, Ontario.

Friday, November 27, 2009
concert 1: David Gogo Band
recorded at the Edmonton Labatt Blues Festival
Although still relatively young in "blues years", David Gogo has accomplished much in his career. So far he has three Juno nominations, was named Musician of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, was twice named "Guitarist of the Year" at the Maple Blues Awards, and has been bestowed with the CBC Saturday Night Blues, "Great Canadian Blues Award" for a lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada. Nine albums have been released under his name. After a critically acclaimed album showcasing his solo acoustic chops, his latest CD, Different Views, has Gogo returning to writing and performing with his tight-knit band. The Edmonton Blues Festival performance showcased many of those songs, and as always, the blistering performer, David Gogo.
concert 2: Digging Roots
recorded at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto
After three years of touring, Digging Roots went back into the studio and created their latest recording, We Are. The CD was co-produced with Kinnie Starr and it builds on the strengths of Digging Roots' live mix of roots, rock, hip hop and blues. We Are is nominated for five Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, to be handed out on Friday, November 27. Digging Roots performed at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto as part of the Planet IndigenUs Festival and Canada Live was there to capture the groove.

Coming up on Canada Live: Basia Bulat, Mark Berube, Great Big Sea & More

This is the weekly thing where I tell you what's coming up on Canada Live, or rather I pass it along. Every weeknight Canada Live on CBC Radio 2 brings you live concerts recorded all over Canada. Someone at Radio 2 passes the list on to me, and I pass it on to you.

This upcoming week is pretty Amazing - it includes Basia Bulat recorded at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Mark Berube & the Patriotic Few recorded at Just For Laughs Montreal (they are not a comedy group, they are pretty insanely good.) Steve Earl recored at Ottawa Buesfest, Great Big Sea recorded at Mile One Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland and lots more. The full list goes:

Monday, November 16th, 2009
concert 1: Basia Bulat
recorded at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival
Basia Bulat made the cover of the Georgia Straight the week of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. And no wonder. This young woman writes songs that could beguile even the most begrudging music fan. Basia says she likes songs that make people want to sing along. She's definitely succeeding in doing that with the songs she writes. Basia and her band played Stage 3 at the festival to a sizeable audience basking the Vancouver seaside sun. This is the sound of contemporary folk music!
concert 2: Gillian Boucher
recorded at the 2008 Celtic Colours International Festival, Sydney Marine Terminal, Sydney, Cape Breton
In the hands of Gillian Boucher, the violin becomes a vehicle of transportation for the mind. Her lyrical approach and sensitivity transcends genres and cultures, transporting listeners to far off exotic places accessible only in imagination. Gillian started touring the world at just 15 - first as a featured performer at Green Linnet's 20th Anniversary Gala in New York, and then throughout North America, Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. She has shared the stage with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Solas, Natalie MacMaster, Cappercaillie, The Battlefield Band, Tom Paxton, Brendan Power and many other performers.

Tuesday, November 17, 2009
concert 1: Mark Berube & the Patriotic Few
recorded at Le Cabaret Just For Laughs in Montreal
In 2008, Mark Berube completed "What the Boat Gave the River", his follow-up album to his previous "What the River Gave the Boat". The Montreal-based songwriter and pianist shines brightest in his lyrical storytelling. His child-like imagination runs rampant through each song. The music sounds big and dramatically charged with swelling instrumentals and intimate vocals. In this taping, he assembles the Patriotic Few band along with strings for a full-out show at the well-suited venue, Cabaret Just For Laughs in Montreal.
concert 2: The Dean McNeill Quartet
recorded at the CBC Regina Galleria
When Dean McNeill isn't working as the head of the music department at the University of Saskatchewan, performing with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra or leading Saskatoon's Metro Jazz Ensemble, he finds the time to hone his skills as a trumpet player and composer -- oh yes, and be a Dad to a toddler. In this concert we'll hear Dean playing both trumpet and flugelhorn on some of his jazz favorites as well as an original composition. He's joined by guitarist Jack Semple, Carlo Petrovitch on bass and drummer Arlan Kopp.

Wednesday, November 18, 2009
concert 1: Steve Earle
recorded at Ottawa Bluesfest
Steve Earle's music and his person have ridden a roller coaster since he first came to North America's attention a few decades ago. He's hit rock bottom and bounced back up again, and candidly tells stories about it in between his own songs and those of Townes Van Zandt. Townes is Earle's latest release, a tribute to his friend. A spectacularly clear and beautiful night in Ottawa made the perfect backdrop to this solo performance at Bluesfest.

Thursday, November 19, 2009
concert 1: Great Big Sea
recorded at Mile One Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland
It was St. Paddy's Day weekend in St. John's when hometown heroes Great Big Sea hit the stage at Mile One Centre. They were nearing the end of their seven-month international tour in support of their latest CD release, Fortune's Favour. The place went wild as Alan Doyle, Sean McCann, Bob Hallett and a supporting cast of several thousand crazed Newfoundland republicans ramped up the best kitchen party on the planet.

Friday, November 20, 2009
concert 1: Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience
recorded at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton, N.B.
The Maritime provinces have developed a considerable appetite for Cajun and Zydeco music, largely due to the Acadian population -- the Cajun's long lost cousins. And there were many in the capacity audience for Terrance Simien's show at the 2009 Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick this September. From the moment he and his band took the stage, there was festive atmosphere, almost like a mini Mardi Gras with the audience dancing and traditional beads being tossed about.
concert 2: Alicia Borisonik & The Argentinian Project
recorded at the Ottawa Jazz Festival
Alicia Borisonik moved to the Greater Ottawa Area in 1994 to escape the regime in Argentina. She makes her living from music as a teacher of jazz and tango piano as well as a performer in her own band: The Argentinian Project. This concert primarily features songs from her second CD, Busco un Lugar ("Looking for my Home"), which is mostly based on Alicia's return to Buenos Aires in 2006 to spend time studying tango and Argentinian folk music.

concert 1: Harry Manx
recorded at the Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna, BC
Harry Manx's touring has taken him to four continents and his horizon is still expanding. Harry's concerts are like reuniting with an old friend, and with that friend trying out a favourite recipe -- but this time with different herbs and spices. This concert was recorded early in Harry Manx's Bread & Buddha CD release tour. The CD is Harry's ninth album, and focuses mostly on solo material.

Next Week on Canada Live: Ohbijou at Hillside and others

On weekday evenings at 7 p.m. CBC Radio 2 brings you Canada Live - with live recordings of concerts from around the country. I always thought though that more people might listen to the shows if they knew what/who was coming up and when. So, someone at Radio 2 now passes me the list so that I can pass it on to you. There's alot of good stuff coming up but you'll especially want to check out Ohbijou recorded live at Hillside on Wednesday.

You can also catch CBC Radio 2 (and 3 and hundreds more radio stations) in your iTunes, on your iPhone or through a variety of other media players. Visit our I Heart Radio page for details. You'll also find links there that will let you digitally capture radio - so that you can record programs that you aren't actually around to listen to.

There are also hundreds of recorded concerts that you can listen to on demand at Concerts on Demand.

Here is next week's Canada Live schedule

November 9 to 13: All in the Family -- Canada Live presents concerts featuring brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, and more. After all, a family that plays together, stays together!

Monday, November 9, 2009
concert 1: Nathan
recorded at the Park Theatre in Winnipeg
A real Winnipeg favourite, this quartet brought its urban-rootsy, homespun sound to the Park Theatre. Their guitars, banjo, accordion, bass and drums are topped by the sweetest vocals and enhanced, unusually, by the theremin. Their sound captures the duality of the prairies; it's at once contemporary and old-fashioned, dark and light, lonely yet cozy. The band features husband and wife team Keri and Devin Latimer, with Shelly Marshall and Damon Mitchell rounding out the group.
concert 2: The Haints Old Time Stringband
Recorded in the Barn at the Vancouver Island MusicFest in Courtenay, BC
A 'haint' is a southern expression for a spirit or ghost. And The Haints revel in the music of the past. They're an old time string trio with a fresh and dynamic sound featuring Appalachian style fiddle and banjo music, old time vocal duets, and rare classics you probably won't hear anywhere else. They've recently earned two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, for Traditional Recording of the Year (for their first album, "Shout Monah") and Ensemble of the Year. Newlyweds Jason and Pharis Romero, plus Erynn Marshall, were right at home in the Barn at the Vancouver Island Music Festival. Canada Live was there to capture their spirited performance. Sit back, relax, and let yourself go back to a simpler time with The Haints Old Time String Band.

Tuesday, November 10, 2009
concert 1: The Duhks
recorded at the Park Theatre in Winnipeg
Fresh from a huge American tour, The Duhks returned to their hometown to give a concert for their adoring fans. They play selections from their newest CD, "Fast Paced World", which was nominated for a Juno and a Western Canadian Music Award, plus some arrangements of some old favourites. The band's newest members are the brother-sister team of Sarah and Christian Dugas, and they add a special new sound to the mix.
Genre: roots.
concert 2: The Sicilian Jazz Project
recorded at Sun Fest in London, Ontario, July 12, 2009
The Sicilian Jazz Project is the brainchild of JUNO Award nominee Michael Occhipinti, and it creates dazzling, multicoloured jazz pieces out of traditional songs from the 1954 Sicilian field recordings by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. With this project, Michael and his bassist brother Roberto Occhipinti pay loving tribute to their family's heritage and make amazing music too. The Project brings together some of Canada's finest jazz musicians - Roberto Occhipinti, Ernie Tollar, Kevin Turcotte, Louis Simao, Barry Romberg - and Italian traditional vocalists: Dominic Mancuso and Maryam Tollar. You'll hear the inspired results in this set recorded live at Sun Fest in London, Ontario.

Wednesday, November 11, 2009
concert 1: Ohbijou
recorded at the 2009 Hillside Festival in Guelph, Ontario
Since the release of their debut album "Swift Feet for Troubling Times" in 2006, Ohbijou have played festivals across Canada and gained both fans and critical acclaim. The band started with two sisters, Casey and Jennifer Mecija, then grew from there. Ohbijou was nominated for the 2007 Galaxie Rising Stars Award and in 2008 they were chosen as one of three bands for the Banff Centre's first Indie Band Residency programme. The band now returns with their highly anticipated followup CD called "Beacons". Canada Live brings you highlights of Ohbijou's performance at the 2009 Hillside Festival in Guelph, Ontario.
concert 2: Jason and Sheldon Valleau
recorded as part of the 2009 TransCanada Alberta Music Series at the Epcor Centre's Engineered Air Theatre in Calgary
Brothers Jason & Sheldon Valleau are the songwriters and principle performers in the band called the Polyjesters. The Valleau brothers still base their performing and recording career close to their hometown of Didsbury, Alberta. They've toured the USA, Europe and Canada and sailed on a few cruise ships with their take on old time jazz, novelty and pop music. They also run the Mountainview Music Festival in Carstairs Alberta, an internet radio station and they have plans to open a coffee shop in Carstairs - with entertainment of course!

Thursday, November 12, 2009
concert 1: The Rankins
recorded at The Halifax Metro Center
It was in 1989 that five siblings from the village of Mabou on Cape Breton Island released their first recording and became known to the world as the Rankin Family, Canada's most celebrated musical family. On February 28th, 2009, The Rankin Family wrapped up a 20 concert reunion tour of Canada at the Metro Center in Halifax, NS. The tour was in celebration of the release of their new CD, "These Are The Moments". They were at their very best at the end of a tour in front of a hometown crowd of over 5,000. One of the best nights ever to record a group that has been one of Cape Breton's most popular exports for 20 years.

Friday, November 13, 2009
concert 1: Fathers & Sons
recorded at Capilano University Theatre in North Vancouver, BC
Sometimes, a son respects his father enough that he wants to follow in his father's footsteps. Sometimes, a father wants to seize every opportunity to learn from his son. Both of these sentiments come to play in tonight's Fathers & Sons concert. Last year, figurative fathers Jim Byrnes and Amos Garrett joined figurative sons Doug Cox and Steve Dawson to share musical heritage and ideas. Tonight we gather in their family room to hear their stories and music.

Land of Talk w/ Besnard Lakes to Perform CBC Radio 2 Montreal Showcase

CBC Radio 2 is behind a special live performance of Routes Montreal at the Segal Centre in Montreal which will feature Land of Talk who, for this show, will be peforming with Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas of the Besnard Lakes.

According to the Segal Centre page:
"or 2009-2010 the Segal Centre proudly welcomes "Routes--Montreal" - CBC Radio's well-known music series that promotes local and national songwriting talent. Come experience the stars of tomorrow today in the intimate and inspiring acoustical environment of the Studio. The four part concert series is recorded live and is then heard across the country on CBC's program "Canada Live."

Over the years, Routes--Montreal has showcased roots, world, jazz and pop-based songwriters and musicians. Hundreds of performers have played the Routes stage and thousands of CBC listeners have attended these tapings. You never know who will turn up - but you'll always have a great time being part of the Routes experience."
That it's a Canada Live show means that there will be a broadcast, hopefully a Concerts on Demand stream and (we can hope) a podcast.

Coming Up on (CBC Radio 2) Canada Live: Hannah Georgas, Jeremy Fisher, NQ Arbuckle, Chantal Kreviazuk & More

Every weeknight CBC Radio 2 brings you live music from all over Canada. A friend at Radio 2 is good enough to pass the schedule on to me so that I can pass it on to you. Coming up this week - starting tonight (Monday, Novmber 2)

Monday, November 2, 2009
concert 1: Hannah Georgas
recorded at St. James Hall in Vancouver
Hannah Georgas [GEORGE-us] describes herself as a "quirky, highly-sensitive, whimsical, and yet extremely serious Vancouver-based singer/ songwriter who will one day win over Jack Black and take his hand in marriage." Now that is a life plan! Hannah opened for Jeremy Fisher on his tour and proved she's someone to keep an eye on. But don't wait, check out her spunky folk sounds now!
concert 2: Jeremy Fisher
recorded at St. James Hall in Vancouver
Jeremy Fisher just keeps getting better and better. Wonderful songs that you can't stop humming are a great place to start. But with this concert, Jeremy shows the wonderful rapport he can have with his audience. They laughed, they clapped, they cheered him on. A wonderful concert capturing a wonderful musician in top form. Folk, pop and good times.

Tuesday, November 3, 2009
concert 1: Bia
recorded at the Théâtre de la Ville [tay-AHTRUH duh la VEEL] in Longueuil [lohn-GAY], Quebec.
Brazilian-born, Montreal-based singer Bia [BEE-ah] encompasses the true meaning of "world artist." Singing in French, Portuguese and Spanish, Bia has been performing and singing for well over a decade. Her fifth studio album, Nocturno, saw its English Canada release in May 2008, and it's filled with sensual vocals accompanied by her trademark acoustic guitar, as well as bossa nova and samba beats. As the days get shorter and colder, enjoy this music that hints of hotter climes.
concert 2: DMBQ
recorded at the D.F. Cook Recital Hall in St. John's, Newfoundland
Billed as the best contemporary jazz band in Canada the DMBQ (Davidson, Murley, Braid Quintet) wrapped up their national tour with a breathtaking concert at the D.F. Cook Recital Hall in St. John's. The frontline features Tara Davidson and Mike Murley on horns, plus pianist David Braid. These three have won an armful of awards as leaders of their own groups, and now with the dynamic rhythm section of Jim Vivian [VIV-ee-in] on bass and Ian Froman [FROH-man] on drums, this gifted band of players and composers are defining the sound of Canadian Jazz. Hot! Hot ! Hot!

Wednesday, November 4, 2009
concert 1: Julian Fauth
recorded at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto
Julian Fauth [FOUTH, rhymes with "mouth"], 2009 Juno Award winner, is a Barrelhouse Blues Man who is never far from a piano. When Canada Live caught up with Julian at The Dakota Tavern in Toronto he had just come from another gig. When he arrived he headed straight for the piano. He didn't leave that piano for hours. When he finally did decide to stop playing, he quickly announced he was off to another all-night gig. The man seems addicted and once you hear him play you can't help but become addicted too.
concert 2: Chloe Albert
recorded at the Epcor Centre's Engineered Air Theatre in Calgary
Edmonton singer-songwriter Chloe Albert performs solo as part of the TransCanada Alberta Music Series - a mini festival held every spring in the Epcor [EP-core] Centre's Engineered Air Theatre. Chloe's debut CD "Dedicated State" earned her the Canadian Folk Music Award for "New Emerging Artist of the Year" in 2008.

Thursday, November 5, 2009
concert 1: Chantal Kreviazuk
recorded at Jackson-Triggs Estate Amphitheatre in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario
Winnipeg's Chantal Kreviazuk [shan-TELL kreh-vee-AH-zuk] has become one of Canada's top music artists, and in October, she released her latest CD called "Plain Jane". Chantal performed songs from that new release in an intimate outdoor setting, in front of a sold out crowd, at the Jackson-Triggs Estate Amphitheatre in Niagara-On-The-Lake. Joining Chantal for the evening was Kevin Fox on cello & guitar and Karen Graves on violin, and Canada Live was there to bring you all of the magic and fun.

Friday, November 6, 2009
concert 1: Little Miss Higgins
recorded at the Regina Performing Arts Centre
By day, she's Jolene Higgins, but by night, Little Miss Higgins haunts the halls of this great land with her stunning vocals and country blues sound. She effortlessly transforms simple stories of life on the prairies into chilling tales and heartwarming adventures. Little Miss is joined by Foy [rhymes with "boy"] Taylor on guitar and stomp box and Joey Lorer [LORE-er] on bass. This show was recorded at the Regina Performing Arts Centre on International Women's Day and presented by Sisters for Sisters - an extension of the Grandmothers for Grandmothers movement started by Stephen Lewis.
concert 2: NQ Arbuckle
recorded at the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, Quebec
NQ Arbuckle's charismatic frontman Neville Quinlan [KWIN-lin] wields an battered black acoustic guitar and strums it with enough force to rival any electrified six-string! His gritty vocals are backed by tight twin brothers Mark and Peter Kesper [KESP-er] on lead guitar and drums and everybody's favourite bass player, John Dinsmore. The audience was truly the fifth member of the band--like at any NQ Arbuckle concert; they were in fine form heckling and singing along.

Coming Up on Canada Live

Every weeknight CBC Radio 2 brings you live music from all over Canada. A friend at Radio 2 is good enough to pass the schedule on to me so that I can pass it on to you. Coming up this week - starting tonight (Monday, Oct. 5)

Monday, October 5, 2009
concert 1: RootStock - Part 2
recorded at the Jackson-Triggs Estate Amphitheatre in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario
RootStock took place at the Jackson-Triggs Estate Amphitheatre in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario, and shone the spotlight on five of Canada's top singer/songwriters. The show features Tom Cochrane, Steven Page, Jim Cuddy, Kathleen Edwards and John Mann from Spirit Of The West, in an intimate, informal outdoor setting. All five talk about their influences, and how certain genres and themes became part of their music. As well, they share stories about how they met and influenced each other. The onstage banter is hilarious and, of course, there's great music performed by all. The second set of the Rootstock concert is deeper, more introspective and more emotional than the funnier, more rollicking first set.

Tuesday, October 6, 2009
concert 1 : Diouf
recorded at the Lion d'Or [lee-OHN DORE] in Montreal
The "Quebegalese" music of the Diouf [DJOOF] brothers, as part of CBC's Mundo Montreal series. Karim [ka-REEM] Diouf and El Hadji [el ha-DJEE] Diouf came to Quebec from Senegal about a dozen years ago. Talented percussionists who also sing in Wolof and French, they first made their mark playing with Les Colocs [lay ko-LUCK]. They then went on to collaborate on numerous artistic projects, exploring diverse musical genres. Wherever they play, the Diouf brothers wow audiences with their compelling energy. Since 2005, the two brothers have traveled the world with Cirque du Soleil's show Delirium. For this concert, the Dioufs have invited special guest Monica Freire [fre-REE] for an evening filled to the brim with new sounds and textures.
concert 2: Lester Quitzau
recorded at the Engineered Air Theatre in Calgary
Best known as one-third of the Juno-award winning trio Tri-Continental (with Madagascar Slim and Bill Bourne), this longtime Alberta guitarist and songwriter now makes his home on the idyllic gulf islands on Canada's west coast. Lester Quitzau's [QUIT-saw] new songs are infused with the almost supernatural calm he finds tending his garden and gazing out over the Pacific Ocean. He played this set on the final night of the 2009 Alberta Music Series at the Engineered Air Theatre in Calgary this past March, just before the release of his newest album, The Same Light.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009
concert 1: Dan Mangan
recorded at the Waterfront Theatre in Vancouver
Dan Mangan [MANG-gan] stands tall on the stage. He's not afraid to tell things straight up, the way they really are. That's what gives his song their emotional punch. Weave those emotional colours into skillful musical arrangements and you've got something you can't ignore. Acoustic pop? Folk? Yes, all those things. Dan and his talented band shared their music with an audience at the Waterfront Theatre in Vancouver.
Concert 2: Meredith Jordan
recorded on the Sunlit Stage No. 1 at the 2009 Regina Folk Festival
Meredith Jordan grew up in Saskatchewan, but she's now emerging onto Canada's national stage. While it would be easy to attach the ubiquitous 'singer-songwriter' label to her, Meredith's music is a unique blend of both folk and jazz elements. That's partly because she studied jazz at Toronto's Humber College, one of Canada's finest jazz institutes. Since graduating she's remained in Toronto. Despite her youth, Meredith takes inspiration from all sorts of performers. Growing up she was surrounded by the sounds of Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. And her music has been described as "a cheeky Rickie Lee Jones meets Adele". Whatever she writes, her quirky personality and unique voice shine through.

Thursday, October 8, 2009
concert 1: Elvis Costello
recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto
Elvis Costello [cost-ELL-oh] is a musical chameleon; he is known as a punk rocker, a balladeer, a classical composer and now a country singer. Elvis' latest album Secret, Profane & Sugarcane was recorded in Nashville. The recordings went well and Elvis decided to bring that Nashville band on the road. Elvis' fans understand his desire to shift and change. In fact they expect it. This was evident as the sold out Massey Hall audience was on its feet for this entire show.

Friday, October 9, 2009
concert 1: Papa Mambo
recorded at the Winnipeg Art Gallery
It's salsa night with Papa Mambo! Percussionist and guitarist Rodrigo Munoz [rod-REE-go MOON-yohz] started up the band 20 years ago and Winnipeg hasn't been the same since. Get set for hot percussion, ripping brass and some scintillating vocals from Amber Epp and Hyalmar Gonzales [heeAL-mar gun-ZAHL-ess]. You'll definitely want to pull out your slick dance moves for this concert from the Winnipeg Art Gallery's Jazz Under the Rooftop series.
concert 2: Carlos del Junco
recorded as part of the Atlantic Jazz Festival in Halifax
Carlos del Junco [CAR-lohss dell HUN-ko] is a Canadian harmonica virtuoso, one of a handful of players around the globe who can get the sounds he does out of his tiny, deceptively simple instrument. Like so many "harp" players, Carlos' music is rooted in the blues - but in the spirit of a truly global appreciation, he takes his genre to an entirely new dimension. Recorded at the mainstage tent of the Atlantic Jazz Festival on July 15th.

concert 1: Dan Mangan

Weave those emotional colours into skillful musical arrangements and you've got something you can't ignore. Acoustic pop? Folk? Yes, all those things. This Week on Canada Live (CBC Radio 2)

Monday to Friday at 7 pm (EST) the CBC airs Canada Live which brings you "Live performance featuring top Canadian roots, rock, indie, jazz and world musicians. Recorded at Canada's preeminent concert halls, music festivals and clubs, presented by musician and broadcaster Andrew Craig." Below is this week's list - as it was sent to me.

Monday, September 28, 2009

concert 1: Catherine MacLellan
recorded at the Harbourfront Theatre in Summerside, PEI
It's no stretch of the imagination to understand why Prince Edward Island's Catherine MacLellan is being hailed as one of this country's most promising singer songwriters. As a child, words and music surrounded her; her father was the great songwriter Gene MacLellan. With pure and ethereal vocals, poetic lyrics and uncompromising songwriting craft, Catherine has captured the hearts of her contemporaries and worldwide media alike. Recently signed to the True North label. Catherine is poised to take her music to the next level and new audiences. Canada Live caught up with her for a concert at the Harbourfront Theatre in her hometown of Summerside.

concert 2: Daniel Lavoie
recorded at the Lion d'Or in Montreal
For the past four decades, Daniel Lavoie [dahn-YELL lah-VWAH] has been active in Quebec and in France, performing his own songs as well as taking part in very popular rock operas, such as Notre-Dame-de-Paris. Last year, he released his 19th album entitled Docteur Tendresse [duck-TUR tahn-DRESS], an opus meant to bring some comfort in our complicated world. Canada Live was there to record the first event of his Canadian tour. In this intimate solo concert, Daniel Lavoie's amazing voice and piano playing are sure to bring warmth to every music lovers' heart. Tune in for a dose of Dr. Tenderness, recorded last fall at the Lion d'Or [lee-OHN DORE] in Montreal as part of the Coup de Coeur [COO duh CUR] Francophone Festival.

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

concert: Arlo Guthrie
recorded at the Vancouver Island MusicFest in Courtenay, B.C.
From Vancouver Island to the Arctic Circle, Arlo Guthrie [ARE-lo GUTH-ree] is a native son! A singer, songwriter, and lifelong political activist, Arlo Guthrie carries on the legacy of his legendary father, Woodie Guthrie. Growing up in the early sixties, Arlo spent time with musicians and beat poets, took it all in and developed his style. Arlo's expressive, distinctive voice and message is still ringing clear. Arlo Guthrie is a natural-born storyteller, whose tales and anecdotes bring his concerts to life. Canada Live caught up with this icon of the 60's folk era, singing and telling stories at the Vancouver Island MusicFest, in Courtenay, B.C., before an adoring crowd that knew all the words.

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

concert 1: Justin Rutledge
recorded at the Calgary Folk Music Festival
Justin Rutledge charmed the crowd with his opening night set at the Calgary Folk Music Festival. The Toronto-based country-tinged singer performed songs from his 3 CDs, backed by a top notch band including Bazil Donovan from Blue Rodeo on bass, Carroll Burke on pedal steel, Blake Manning on drums, David Baxter on guitar. Geoff Hilhorst from The Deep Dark Woods joined in on keyboards for a few tunes too.

concert 2: Jenn Grant
recorded in Studio H, CBC Halifax
Jenn Grant writes songs that are bright and dark pieces of cabaret pop. And Jenn herself is funny and strange and magnetic. Her debut full length record, "Orchestra for the Moon" was recorded at CBC Halifax's Studio H and has received critical acclaim around the world, and the song "Dreamer" from that CD became the theme of the CBC TV series Heartland. Jenn has toured with Ron Sexsmith and The Weakerthans. She's been all across Canada and into Europe. Amid all that, we were lucky enough to get Jenn back into Studio H for an intimate concert featuring some of the material from her 2nd recording "Echoes".

Thursday, October 1, 2009

concert 1: RootStock - Part 1
recorded at the Jackson-Triggs Estate Amphitheatre in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario
RootStock shines the spotlight on five of Canada's top singer/songwriters. The show features Tom Cochrane [COCK-rin], Steven Page, Jim Cuddy, Kathleen Edwards and John Mann from Spirit Of The West, in an intimate, informal outdoor setting. All five talk about their influences, and how certain genres and themes became part of their music. As well, they share stories about how they met and influenced each other. The onstage banter is hilarious and, of course, there's great music performed by all.

Friday, October 2, 2009

concert 1 : Andrea Lindsay
recorded at the Théâtre de la Ville in Longueuil, Québec
From the cozy cabaret "P'tit Bar" at the Théâtre de la Ville in Longueuil, chanteuse and song stylist Andrea Lindsay brings us her fine porcelain pop. Born and raised in Guelph, Ontario, Andrea was drawn to singing 'en francais' [ahn frahn-SAY], and she found her own unique sound with it. With her three-piece band covering guitar, drums, keyboards, cello and glockenspiel, it's no wonder that Andrea Lindsay has a growing fan base in both Québec and French-speaking Europe.

concert 2: The Fugitives
recorded at the ColdSnap Festival in Prince George, B.C.
Vancouver artists Mark Berube [bare-OO-bay], Barbara Adler, Brendan McLeod, and Stephen Charles are The Fugitives, a blend of skillful musicianship and passionate performance poetry. They are storytellers who use guitar, banjo, accordion and percussion to accent their observations. Called variously slam folk, folk hop and spoken word cabaret, their performances are both provocative and compelling, and a mix of strongly held conviction and gritty reality.

Coming up on Canada Live (CBC Radio 2)

Monday to Friday at 7 pm (EST) the CBC airs Canada Live which brings you "Live performance featuring top Canadian roots, rock, indie, jazz and world musicians. Recorded at Canada's preeminent concert halls, music festivals and clubs, presented by musician and broadcaster Andrew Craig." Sadly we don't have anyone who writes for NxEW that covers most of this (if it's up your alley click here. Our writers to date tend toward indie rock, folk, roots, & punk - which is great but we're open to people covering other areas of Canadian music. Back to the point - I try to point out hi-lights from time to time of the stuff on Canada Live and the stuff that is archived on Concerts on Demand (check out Hey Rosetta! Live in Woody Point, Newfoundland and Neko Case live at the Vogue Theatre). Sadly, most of the time, I can only do this after the fact as I don't know what's coming up.

Fortunately, this week, someone at Radio 2 has sent me a list of stuff coming up on Canada Live so I'm passing the list on in it's entirety. I'll continue to post these as I get them (when and if I get them):

Monday, September 21, 2009
concert 1: Jacob and Lily

recorded at the Winnipeg Folk Exchange
Jacob and Lily are actually Karla Adolphe and Caleb Friesen. They're a great little folk band with a gospel twinge.
Karla is the songwriter and guitarist and she's got vocal chops that will blow you away. Caleb plays percussion instruments from all over the world. For this concert, they're also joined by guitarist Brian James. Together they create a unique and organic sound. In 2007 their album Cathedral was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award.

concert 2: Shannon Quinn
recorded at CBC Radio Studio H in Halifax
Shannon Quinn is just 19 years of age, but she's already been performing on the fiddle for years and years. Her musical style is highly influenced by that of her ancestors, originating from County Clare, Ireland. Besides being a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer, Shannon is also a world class Irish dancer and has performed with The Chieftains and Cirque du Soleil. Canada Live caught up with Shannon in performance at our CBC Radio studio H in Halifax back in January. The night was bitterly cold, but inside the studio the warmth and passion of her playing thawed even the coldest heart.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009
concert 1: Susie Arioli Trio feat. Jordan Officer

recorded as part of Routes_Montreal in Studio 12, CBC Montreal
Montreal vocalist Susie Arioli had a big year last year. This Routes Montreal taping came on the heels of her most recent CD release Night Lights. Before this, she and guitarist Jordan Officer released a live DVD from The Montreal International Jazz Festival - which was quickly certified Gold in Canada. This Routes_Montreal performance is pure and elegant - like the driest vodka martini enjoyed in your favourite chair. Crowds adore her unpretentious and warm delivery. It also doesn't hurt to have one of Canada's most accomplished guitarists in your band. Jordan Officer is a star in his own right and together with bassist Bill Gossage [GOSS-ij] provide a tight and totally in-sync trio.

concert 2: October Trio feat. Brad Turner
recorded at The Western Front in Vancouver
The October Trio is an impressive jazz ensemble from Vancouver that are amongst those leading the way for the next generation. Their individual and collective skills are proof enough, but add the help of someone like Juno award winning Brad Turner and you have the right ingredients for musical magic. Turner produced the October Trio's recent album and often performs with them as he did on the occasion of their CD Release concert at Vancouver's venerable institution for the new, The Western Front.

Wednesday, September 23, 2009
concert 1: Daby Touré

recorded at the Regina Folk Festival in Regina, SK
Daby Touré [dab-EE too-RAY] is a world class artist whose music crosses geographical boundaries, language and culture. Daby's life started out in Mauritania, where the Sahara divides northern Arabic Africa with southern black Africa. He grew up surrounded by music and multiple languages and cultures - Toucouleur, Fulbe, Soninké and Wolof. Paris has been his home for many years, so intermingled with those childhood influences are strong European elements as well. Daby shines the light on all of these diverse influences in his songs, which are sung in both French and English as well the African languages of his childhood. Daby is an artist on the Real World label, and on this concert he's joined by a wonderful rhythm section from New York - bass player Fima Ephron and Louis Cato on drums.

concert 2: Steve Marriner
recorded at the Great Canadian Theatre Company in Ottawa
One-man-band and harmonica sensation Steve Marriner gives a powerful solo performance at the GCTC as part of the Ottawa Folk Festival's Acoustic Waves concert series. Steve brings "multi-tasking" to a whole other level with his kick drum, suitcase of mouth harps, tambourine, vocals prowess, and guitar skills! He performs his own original blues tunes and a few tributes to some greats. This man's old blues soul and connection with the crowd belie the fact hat he's only 26!

Thursday, September 24, 2009
concert 1: Rufus Wainwright

recorded at the Jackson-Triggs Estate Amphitheatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario
Hot off of the debut of his first opera, "Prima Donna", at the Manchester International Festival, Rufus Wainwright embarks on a solo tour, and the first date is this Jackson-Triggs Estate Amphitheatre performance for Canada Live. Over the years, Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. This performance features his favourite songs and stories as he performs solo, alternating between a grand piano and acoustic guitar.

Friday, September 25, 2009
concert 1: Jason Plumb and the Willing

recorded at The Distrikt in Regina
From his early days as the frontman for the Juno-award winning band 'The Waltons' to his more recent years as a solo artist, Jason Plumb has consistently been one of Saskatchewan's biggest musical ambassadors to Canada - both as songwriter and performer. He's been an important part of the Canadian musical landscape for the past 20 years. This concert was the first in a tour that launched his latest CD Wide Open Music: Songs for Saskatchewan. The CD draws on pieces Jason's been commissioned to write, new tunes and some of his best work from his years with the Waltons. This concert is a celebration of Saskatchewan in all its various forms: as the birth place of Medicare, home of the Mounties and the Roughriders, Regina's Wascana Lake, and the humble Saskatoon berry. Jason's songs fuse personal emotion and experience with the environment he grew up in and continues to love.

concert 2: Rachelle van Zanten
recorded at the Yardbird Suite in Edmonton
Rachelle [ruh-SHELL] Van Zanten [ZAN-ten] was born in the wilds of northern BC., and grew up on the family's cattle ranch near Francois Lake. When not on tour, you'll likely find her there, in her hand-built cabin in the woods. But it was the more than 10 years spent in Edmonton, exposed to its vibrant and supportive music scene, that fueled Rachelle's muse and gave rise to the dynamic artist she is today. A decade spent with fellow female rockers 'Painting Daisies', was followed by her highly acclaimed debut solo CD, Back to Francois. She recently released her sophomore offering, Where Your Garden Grows. The disc was recorded (mostly) in Victoria, and mixed in England by Tchad [CHAD] Blake, known for his work with Tom Waits, Los Lobos, Bonnie Raitt, and many others. This CD release concert found Rachelle van Zanten return to Edmonton with a rockin' performance at the legendary jazz club, The Yardbird Suite.
