Broken Social Scene Says Thank You and Goodnight (for Now)

Tonight in Rio Broken Social Scene will conclude almost 18 months of touring with what may be their last show ever. It is actually being referred to as a hiatus, which means that the band is breaking up, unless and until they change their mind which is always a possibility. In reality if you had just finished nearly 18 solid months of touring you'd be saying 'never again' too, at least for now.
If this is the end for Broken Social Scene it may be time. Over the last ten years the band has continually produced great music, has helped to draw attention to it's members numerous solo and side projects (including Feist, Metric, Stars, K-OS, Jason Collett, Apostle of Hustle, Do Make Say Think, and others.) BSS brought new credibility to the Toronto music scene and to the larger Canadian scene, several years ahead of Arcade Fire.

Maybe that, plus 4 amazing albums, not including the B-sides collection 'Bee Hives', the two Broken Social Scene Presents... albums, the 4 EPs, 5 film scores, the book 'This Book is Broken' and the Bruce Campbell film 'This Movie is Broken' plus 5 Juno Awards and 2 Polaris Music Prize short-list spots and an incalculable influence on a generation of musicians and fans is enough. Too many bands seem to hang on well past their prime and become stale. Each of Broken Social Scene's small army of current and former members is still young enough to move on to other projects and bring us something new.

Whatever happens in the future, it's been a great 10 years. Thanks very much to Broken Social Scene and all of it's many, many contributors.

  1. BSS always seems like a tenuous and precarious moment. Like some special particle that manifests only under very specific circumstances and slightly different each time. Whether or not this is actually the end, I couldn’t say, but I hold my skepticism; this is the third time after an extensive tour that I’ve heard tell of the ‘last show’ and the indefinite hiatus, and each time, 2 years later, came a new album, and new collaborators. I’ll bid adieu to the BSS of ‘Forgiveness Rock Record’ and look for their return, in whatever incarnation they it will take.
